Position Summary: The Die Maker is responsible for studying blueprints and prototypes, machining die components, assembling dies, and ensuring their functionality through precise adjustments and inspections. This role requires a strong understanding of machining techniques, shop mathematics, and the properties of sheet metal under pressure.
Pay Rate: $31.80
Key Responsibilities:
- Study blueprints of products and dies, as well as prototypes and die models.
- Visualize the structure and function of dies and plan operations, applying knowledge of shop mathematics, machining, and assembly methods.
- Measure, mark, and scribe tools and stock for machining.
- Set up and operate machine tools, such as lathes, milling machines, and grinders, to machine parts to specifications.
- Verify machined parts against specifications for accuracy.
- Lift machined parts manually or using a hoist and position them on worktables for assembly.
- Shape, smooth, and fit flat and contoured surfaces of die members and parts using hand tools (e.g., stones, files, and powered grinders).
- Verify dimensions, clearances, and alignment of die members and parts using tools like dial indicators, gage blocks, thickness gages, and micrometers.
- Dowels and bolt parts together using hand tools (e.g., hammers and wrenches).
- Operate power presses, perform final adjustments and refinement operations on dies in press, and inspect piece part products to complete tryouts for Initial Sample Inspection Reports (ISIR).
- Exercise judgment to manufacture components and dies efficiently and in a timely manner.
- Perform other customer-driven or product-driven duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
Experience:
- 1-2 years of die making or die repair experience.
Essential Skills:
- Proficiency in blueprint reading.
- Knowledge of tool room equipment.
- Machining skills, including ID-OD grinding to close tolerances.
- Familiarity with manufacturing environments.
- Strong foundation in shop math (geometry, algebra, and trigonometry).
- Computer drafting skills.
- Engineering problem-solving abilities.
- Knowledge of GD&T.
- Familiarity with ISO 9000 standards.
- Understanding of materials and mechanical drafting.
- Experience in tooling design.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and move medium-weight materials (30-50 pounds).
- Manual dexterity for precision tool work.
- Prolonged periods standing or working at machinery.
