Arlington, VA (Hybrid – Tuesdays & Thursdays in Crystal City office)

Full-Time

$70,000–$80,000 annually


Overview

The Air & Space Forces Aid Society (AFAS) is seeking a Financial Assistance Caseworker to provide direct support to Airmen, Guardians, and their families experiencing financial hardship. This role delivers timely, accurate, and compassionate financial assistance while exercising sound judgment and maintaining alignment with AFAS policy.


About AFAS

AFAS is the official charity of the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Space Force. Since 1942, we have provided emergency financial assistance, education support, and community programs to military families in need. Our team of 32 supports families across more than 70 installations nationwide.


Responsibilities

  • Manage a high-volume caseload of financial assistance applications
  • Conduct thorough financial assessments, including income, expenses, and liabilities
  • Determine appropriate assistance, including grants, loans, or a combination of both, and approve or deny within delegated authority in accordance with policy
  • Keep all cases accurate, fully documented, and audit-ready
  • Provide financial guidance and connect clients to additional support resources
  • Coordinate with partners including the American Red Cross, military leadership, and Military & Family Readiness Centers
  • Maintain consistent communication with clients and stakeholders while protecting confidentiality
  • Participate in outreach and awareness efforts across military communities
  • Support after-hours and on-call coverage as part of a rotation

  • Qualifications

    • Experience in financial assistance, case management, counseling, or human services preferred
    • Strong analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills with attention to detail
    • Experience managing high-volume, time-sensitive workloads
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and case management systems
    • Understanding of military culture and service member support environments
    • Ability to manage sensitive personal and financial information with discretion
    • Bachelor's degree in finance, social work, business, or a related field, or equivalent experience preferred
    • Demonstrated professionalism and sound judgment in complex, emotionally charged, or high-stress situations
    • Ability to work effectively within structured policies, supervisory expectations, and compliance-driven environments


    Work Environment

    Onsite Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8–5, with remote flexibility aligned to operational needs. Participation in after-hours and on-call rotation is required. This role calls for consistent professionalism, discretion, and accountability to organizational policies and procedures.
