Mission Overview The Sentinel Weapon System will replace the aging Minuteman III ICBM, modernizing the land-based leg of the U.S. nuclear triad. As a System Safety Engineer on this historic recapitalization effort, you will play a pivotal role in identifying, analyzing, and mitigating hazards to personnel, equipment, and the environment throughout the system's lifecycle.
This position ensures system safety hazards are identified and mitigated resulting in mishap prevention and communication of system safety risks. This position will exercise technical responsibilities over the combination of disciplines that encompass the processes and approaches for addressing laws, regulations, Executive Orders (EO), DoD policies, environmental compliance, and hazards associated with environmental impacts, system safety (e.g., platforms, systems, system-of-systems, weapons, explosives, software, ordnance, combat systems), occupational safety and health, hazardous materials management, and pollution prevention.
Skillsets: Experience in risk management and knowledge of System Safety (MIL-STD-882E and AFI 91-202) is preferred. Understanding of Air Force acquisition and sustainment processes is preferred. Knowledge of ICBM weapon system(s) is preferred.

DUTIES:
- System Safety Engineering: Execute system safety in accordance with MIL-STD-882E (Standard Practice for System Safety) and DoD acquisition policies.
- Hazard Analysis: Review, evaluate, and provide engineering assessments on prime contractor hazard analyses, including Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA), Subsystem Hazard Analysis (SSHA), System Hazard Analysis (SHA), and Operating and Support Hazard Analysis (O&SHA).
- Risk Management: Identify safety-critical risks, evaluate mitigation strategies, and present risk acceptance recommendations to program leadership and the System Safety Working Group (SSWG).
- Design Review: Participate in technical reviews (e.g., SRR, PDR, CDR) to ensure system safety requirements are integrated into the Sentinel weapon system hardware, software, and facility designs.
- Cross-Functional Coordination: Collaborate with systems engineering, test and evaluation, logistics, and nuclear surety teams to ensure alignment of safety objectives across the program.
- Provide system safety guidance to Sentinel Functional and Integrated Product Teams, and acquisition and sustainment programs.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Engineering (e.g., Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, or Systems Engineering) from an ABET-accredited institution.
- Experience: Demonstrated experience in system safety engineering, hazard analysis, and risk management within DoD weapon system acquisition. Experience with ICBMs or nuclear-capable systems is highly desirable.
- Communication: Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical safety risks into actionable recommendations for leadership.
- U.S. CITIZENSHIP
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret/SCI security clearance and required to handle and safeguard sensitive and/or classified information in accordance with regulations to reduce potential compromise.

- A professional engineering degree at the bachelor’s level from an ABET accredited institution is required
- This position is designated as a drug testing position. The incumbent is subjected to pre-employment drug testing as a condition of employment, and participation in random drug testing thereafter.
- Employee must meet Defense Acquisition Workforce Improvement Act (DAWIA) requirements, which includes achieving Engineering and Technical Management “Practitioner” certification category within required timeframe after appointment.
- In accordance with the Ethics in Government Act, 1978, employee may be required to file an OGE Form 450, Confidential Financial Disclosure Report, upon appointment and will be required to file annually.
- Work may occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft.
