Composite Fiberglass Technician
Pay rate: $ $31.00 per hour, based on experience.
The Composite Fiberglass Technician performs a variety of tasks in the manufacturing of fiberglass swimming pools, including lamination, gelcoat application, repairs, and mould and plug maintenance. The role requires precision craftsmanship, safety awareness, and adherence to strict quality standards in accordance with ALT's procedures and OSHA requirements.
The following classifications define the scope, skill expectations, and career-path progression within ALT Inc.'s Manufacturing and Operations teams.
Each level represents increasing technical ability, accountability, and leadership in support of ALT's safety, quality, and production standards.
- Level 1 – General Laborer: Entry-level role performing basic material handling, workstation setup, and housekeeping tasks.
- Level 2 – Roller: Applies resins and fiberglass by hand rolling methods; assists chopper-gun operators and supports lamination processes.
- Level 3 – Spray Operator: Operates chopper gun or spray-up equipment; applies gelcoat and resin layers per production specifications and safety procedures.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepare, apply, and cure gelcoat to production moulds following specified color, thickness, and curing standards.
- Lay up fiberglass materials by hand or with a chopper gun using resins, catalysts, and fiberglass matting.
- Perform trimming, sanding, and repair of defects, air pockets, or imperfections in fiberglass shells with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Assist with plug and mould preparation, repair, and finishing, including surface polishing, bogging, and sealing with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Maintain proper mixing ratios for resins and catalysts and ensure safe storage and handling of chemicals per OSHA 29 CFR
- Participate in daily safety briefings, pre-start checks, and toolbox talks.
- Inspect finished surfaces for consistency, gloss, and defect-free finish.
- Maintain cleanliness of the lamination bay and tools per 6S (sort, set, shine, standardize, sustain, safety) standards.
- Accurately complete daily production logs and report material usage.
- Adhere to PPE requirements including respirators, gloves, and eye protection, and report any unsafe conditions or injuries immediately.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Proficiency in fiberglass lamination, gelcoat application, and repair techniques.
- Knowledge of composite materials, chemical curing, and surface finishing processes.
- Ability to read and interpret job travelers (production work instructions), work orders, and quality specifications.
- Attention to detail and commitment to achieving consistent high-quality finishes.
- Physical capability to lift up to 50 lbs, perform repetitive movements, and work in a non-climate-controlled environment with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Effective communication skills and teamwork within a production setting.
Training and Certification Requirements
- OSHA 10-Hour Safety Course (preferred; provided by ALT if required).
- HAZCOM and PPE training (provided during onboarding).
- Fibreglass, resin, chemical-handling and equipment training (provided during onboarding).
- Forklift / Gantry / Confined Space training (preferred; or can be completed after starting).
- Manual handling and ergonomics training (provided during onboarding).
- 6S and new-hire orientation (provided during onboarding).
Performance Standards and Evaluation
Performance will be evaluated based on:
- Consistent use of safety procedures, reporting hazards early, and working safely.
- Quality of workmanship and defect rate of completed pools.
- Efficiency and timeliness of task completion.
- Teamwork, communication, and adherence to ALT values.
- Initiative and participation in process improvements.
