Deseret Cattle & Timber is seeking experienced Cowboys to join our local ranch team!

Summary:

The Cowboy II is an experienced, hourly role responsible for performing a wide range of livestock and ranch operations with limited supervision. This position builds on foundational skills and independently completes routine and moderately complex tasks. The Cowboy II demonstrates strong working knowledge of cattle handling and ranch operations while contributing to the overall efficiency and success of the unit.

Responsibilities:

• Perform daily livestock care activities, including feeding, watering, monitoring, and basic health checks.
• Ensure consistent access to clean water, maintain pasture infrastructure, and manage forage and supplementation strategies to meet herd performance targets.
• Conduct advanced assessments of cow condition and health; provide expert feedback and recommendations to the Cattle Unit Manager.
• Gather, sort, move, and process cattle with confidence and minimal direction. Identify common livestock health concerns and assist with treatment as directed.
• Carry out pasture and land management tasks, including fence repair, water system checks, and general upkeep.
• Complete assigned work independently within established guidelines and timelines.
• Coordinate and execute scheduled activities from the cattle calendar of events, ensuring timely and accurate completion.
• Mentor junior technicians and assist in training new staff on herd management practices and protocols.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• High school or equivalent; post-secondary education in animal science, agriculture, or a related field preferred.
• 5 years of experience in cattle herd management, livestock operations, or a related agricultural field.
• Strong expertise in cattle nutrition, health monitoring, and pasture management.
• Advanced proficiency in animal husbandry procedures, including castration, euthanasia, vaccination, dehorning, ear tagging, ear notching, branding, and blood sampling.
• Proficient in operating and maintaining farm equipment and tools.
• Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, outdoor environment.

• Frequently grasp, hold, and manipulate tools and animal handling equipment.
• Effectively communicate in a variety of environments, including outdoor settings, in person, by phone, and using electronic devices as required.
• Be able to see and hear well enough to monitor livestock condition, identify signs of illness or distress, and respond to safety warnings and environmental hazards.
• Assist with and/or perform routine animal husbandry procedures, following established protocols and training, which may include vaccinations, ear tagging, branding, dehorning, castration, blood sampling, and euthanasia.
