JOB TITLE: Park Maintenance - Seasonal - Horticulture Crew

DEPARTMENT: Parks and Recreation - Park Maintenance

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

HOURLY RATE: $15 - $20 per hour

POSITION SUMMARY:
  • These positions will perform a variety of maintenance duties pertaining to the overall operation of green spaces, grounds and facilities located in the parks, cemetery and other city owned facilities. These tasks will generally fall within the operational areas of facility, grounds, custodial and special events. The ideal candidate should have the ability to work 16-40hrs per week, both alone and on a small team.
  • The purpose of this position is to support the department's operational responsibilities. Its mission is to provide safe, professionally maintained and aesthetically attractive parks and green spaces that provide opportunities for active and passive recreation while enhancing the quality of life and contributing to the value and attractiveness of O'Fallon as a place to live and visit.
  • The availability of positions varies throughout the year. Park maintenance seasonal employment starts as early as February and concludes in November. Additionally, the position offers opportunities to work within other areas of the parks department such as the general seasonal maintenance crew and the seasonal ballfield maintenance crew.
  • Experience is not required or necessary. Job specific training will be provided. Pay rate will be determined based on experience and availability. There are many available shifts, and most personal schedules can be accommodated. This position reports to the park maintenance supervisor.

ESSENTIAL POSITION DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITES
  • Maintain various grounds, facilities, landscaping and green spaces for the parks department by performing plant installations, pruning, deadheading, mulching, weeding, edging, tilling, raking, watering, digging, brush removal, invasive species removal, trimming, mowing, blowing and other manual tasks not specifically mentioned.
  • Safe and responsible use of hand tools and equipment such as park vehicles with trailers, bed edger, sod cutter, trimmers, mowers, utility vehicles and more.
  • Janitorial functions in restrooms and park facilities to maintain a clean environment, including litter pick up and trash disposal.
  • Special event setup and service
  • Special protocols are implemented to lessen the need to work in adverse weather conditions, although at times the ability to perform labor intensive tasks in all types of weather conditions may be necessary.
  • Must be able to work independently without direct supervision, as well as in a team environment to safely and productively complete tasks. The ability to exercise initiative, good judgement, and time management while remaining productive is essential. Work assignments will generally fall within operational areas described for this position, but the ability to support park needs in other areas will be required at times.

  • Ability to efficiently and courteously interact with pedestrians.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • The ability to perform physical activities such as standing or walking for extended periods, frequent and repeated bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, climbing of ladders, kneeling or working aloft from an aerial lift device/truck
  • The ability to lift 30-70lbs regularly
  • The ability to push, pull, squat, walk, stand, complete a variety of motor skills and perform repetitive movements on a regular basis
  • The ability to perform work in an outdoor work environment, including inclement weather

MINIMUM QUALFICATIONS

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES
  • Must be at least 17 years of age
  • Possession of a valid driver's license in good standing

PREFERRED QUALFICATIONS
  • Advanced technical knowledge in horticulture, grounds management or a related field
  • Experience with operating equipment such as trucks and trailers, mowers, utility vehicles or others
