Our mission is to protect the integrity of New Mexico's livestock industry. Our team of about sixty full time inspectors and another sixty full and part time deputies continuously patrol and perform inspections around our state to help keep our livestock free from disease and safe from theft. We are also the office of the State Veterinarian, whose team collaborates with various government and private sector partners to ensure that our state remains free of diseases.

This position will be based out of NMLB District 2, Clayton, NM area.

This position requires Law Enforcement Certification at hire. If you are not currently a Certified Law Enforcement Officer but are willing to become certified within a year of hire, apply for the Clayton Livestock Inspector, Non-Certified (NMLB #4951) position currently posted (Job ID:162724).

Why does the job exist?

This job will assist with Law Enforcement duties and inspections in District 11. This position requires NM Law Enforcement Certification. This Individual will assist the team In these districts and enforce the Chapter 77.2 and NMAC 21.30 The inspector will be charged with protecting producers from Theft of livestock, investigating animal cruelties and controlling livestock movement.

How does it get done?

This Inspector will coordinate with the district supervisor to accomplish goals set forth as a team. Responsibilities would Include enforcement of the Chapter 77 .2 statutes and NMAC 21.30 rules. Patrolling roadways to control theft and complete investigations of theft and animal cruelty.

Who are the customers?

This position would serve the producers of District 2.

Ideal Candidate

Current NM Law Enforcement Certification
Experience in agriculture, ranching and/or farming
Experience with livestock

Minimum Qualification

Associate's degree in Agriculture or Animal Husbandry, Criminology, Criminal/Political Science, or related degree allowable by agency at time of posting and three (3) years of livestock, agriculture, law enforcement related experience, and/or direct experience as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of this classification. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling five (5) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Current certification as a commissioned Law Enforcement Officer issued by the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy is required.

Employment Requirements

Applicants must pass the NM Livestock Board's written and field performance tests to be considered further in the application process. Employment offers are contingent on a successful background check and drug screen. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. APPLICANTS MUST BE CERTIFIED LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS AT HIRE.

Working Conditions

This position requires working with and around livestock, conducting investigations, road stops and issuing citations. The duties involve frequent standing, bending, lifting, sitting and driving a state vehicle. Work is performed outdoors in inclement weather, dangerous situations, with heavy lifting of 50 or more pounds. Erratic seasonal hours. Schedule may require weekend and holiday work.
