Job Summary & General Information
Hours Per Week: Availability between 7:30am to 3:30pm (actual shift will vary); 40 hours/week

The City of Alpharetta Recreation, Parks and Cultural Services Department is accepting applications for the seasonal position of Camp Director for the AG-Venture Summer Day Camp, to provide a safe, fun, and memorable camp experience for children aged 7 to 12.

The purpose of this position is to organize and supervise the day-to-day operation of the summer camp program. The Camp Director reports to the Volunteer and Education Coordinator and Community Services Manager at Old Rucker Farm. The Camp Director would need to be available to work at the camp from May 18th-July. The Camp Director may be required to work the weeks prior to camp sporadically helping with inventory, camp planning, and staff interviews. Activity areas include outdoor educational games, horticulture-based and small animal care activities, arts and crafts, on-site enrichment programs, as well as group snack time.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities
The Camp Director role includes the following:
  • Assists Volunteer and Education Coordinator in monitoring and evaluating effectiveness of camp program.
  • Works with Community Services Manager and Volunteer and Education Coordinator to set the schedule for each week of camp; ensures all necessary supplies are on hand for number of registered campers; maintains inventory of camp supplies.
  • Prepares all communication to parent(s) and runs weekly reports in preparation for camp schedules.
  • Communicates with Volunteer and Education Coordinator about program needs; assists camp guest speakers; makes recommendations for replacement items; supervises tasks assigned to camp counselor staff.
  • Coordinates logistical set-up and clean-up of camp including group area; maintains cleanliness of camp areas, assisting with light-duty cleaning, and the setup and breakdown of tables and chairs
  • Plans age-appropriate games, crafts, and activities as needed for children between the ages of 7 -12.
  • Assists Volunteer and Education Coordinator in development of and adheres to policies and procedures related to assigned camp and ensures compliance by staff and campers; assists in the handling of disciplinary actions as needed.
  • Prepares accident/incident reports as needed and follows established procedures for reporting accidents/incidents; handles medical, safety and severe weather emergencies per the procedures noted in the camp staff manual and during in-service training; completes needed reports and submits them to the appropriate party.
  • Assists Community Services Manager with organization of pre-camp staff training and participates in in-service training as required.
  • Maintains positive relationships with parents, campers, and staff.
  • Maintains and monitors accurate records and forms such as behavioral incidents, accident reports, parental communication and medical issues.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

This is not a desk job. The Camp Director is expected to take an active, hands-on role in the daily operation of the camp -- interacting regularly with participants, parents and staff to provide a high-quality experience for all stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by two to three years previous experience and/or training that includes supervision in a camp environment.
  • Teacher certification is preferred.
  • At least two (2) years of paid or volunteer experience planning, organizing and supervising agricultural and/or recreational activities for groups of children ages 7-12 in a structured environment is preferred.
  • Individuals with a background in agriculture education are strongly desired.
  • Applicant must have considerable knowledge of summer camp planning and administration.
  • Applicant must have strong leadership, customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Applicant must have the ability to follow oral and written instructions. Exceptional communication skills are essential.
  • Applicant must have PC computer skills, particularly with the internet, e-mail, MS Excel, and Word documents. Applicant must be willing to work cooperatively with others.
  • Applicant must be able to interpret policies and procedures.
  • Applicant must provide their own transportation.
  • Applicant must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Applicant must be willing to work a flexible daytime schedule, Monday through Friday, from May 18 through July 10.
  • Applicant must be able to attend mandatory Camp Staff orientation/training sessions Tuesday, May 30 through Friday, June 3.
  • Applicant must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Regular and consistent attendance is required.

Pre-Employment Requirements
  • Applicant must clear a criminal background check.
  • Applicant must pass a mandatory drug test.
  • Hired applicants must possess a valid certificate of course completion for First Aid training that includes Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for Children and Infant, first aid, and AED. This training must be from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association. The City of Alpharetta will offer a CPR course during the week of camp training for all those who need this certification.
  • Hired applicants must provide official verification as to identity and work authorization.
