Job Description

The City of Alpharetta Recreation, Parks and Cultural Services Department is accepting applications for the seasonal position of Camp Counselor for the AG-Venture Summer Day Camp, to provide a safe, fun, and memorable camp experience for children aged 7 to 12.
The purpose of this position is to organize and assist in the day-to-day operation of the summer camp program. The Camp Counselor reports to the Camp Director and Volunteer and Education Coordinator at Old Rucker Farm. The Camp Counselor would need to be available to work at the camp from May 26 - July . Activity areas include outdoor educational games, horticulture-based and small animal care activities, arts and crafts, on-site enrichment programs, as well as group snack time.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities
The Camp Counselor will be responsible for:
  • Assists Camp Director in monitoring and evaluating effectiveness of camp program.
  • Assists Camp Director in maintaining camp schedule of activities and maintains inventory of camp supplies.
  • Communicates with Camp Director about program needs; assists guest speakers during camp sessions; and makes recommendations for replacement items.
  • Plans and assists in age-appropriate lessons, activities, games, and crafts, as needed for children between the ages of 7-12.
  • Assists Camp Director in coordinating the set-up and clean-up of camp; cleanliness of camp areas.
  • Adheres to camp policies and procedures and ensures staff and camper compliance.
  • Reports all necessary discipline actions to Camp Director as necessary.
  • Under supervision of Camp Director, prepares accident/incident reports as needed and follows established procedures for reporting accidents/incidents; handles medical, safety, and severe weather emergencies per the procedures noted in the camp staff manual and during in-service training; completes needed reports and submits them to the appropriate party.
  • Participates in in-service training as required.
  • Maintains positive relationship with parents, campers, and staff.
  • Perform related duties as required or assigned.

This is not a desk job. The Camp Director is expected to take an active, hands-on role in the daily operation of the camp -- interacting regularly with participants, parents and staff to provide a high-quality experience for all stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications

    • High School Diploma or GED or equivalent supplemented by one to two years previous experience and/or training that includes working in a camp environment.
    • At least one (1) year of paid or volunteer experience assisting in agriculture and/or recreational activities for groups of children aged 7-12 in a structured environment is preferred.
    • Individuals with a background in agriculture or agriculture education are strongly desired.
    • Applicant must have knowledge of summer camp planning and administration.
    • Applicant must have strong leadership, customer service and interpersonal skills.
    • Applicant must have the ability to follow oral and written instructions. Exceptional communication skills are essential.
    • Applicant must have PC computer skills, particularly with the internet, e-mail, MS Excel, and Word documents. Applicant must be willing to work cooperatively with others.
    • Applicant must be able to interpret policies and procedures.
    • Applicant must provide their own transportation.
    • Applicant must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Applicant must be willing to work a flexible daytime schedule, Monday through Friday, from May 20 through July 5.
    • Applicant must be able to attend mandatory Camp Staff orientation/training sessions scheduled Tuesday, May 28 through Friday, May 31.
  • Pre-Employment Requirements
    • Applicant must clear a criminal background check.
    • Applicant must pass a mandatory drug test.
    • Hired applicants must possess a valid certificate of course completion for First Aid training that includes Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for Children and Infant, first aid, and AED. This training must be from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association. The City of Alpharetta will offer a CPR course during the week of camp training for all those who need this certification.
    • Hired applicants must provide official verification as to identity and work authorization.
