Location: Newark, NJ

Summary of Principal Responsibilities: 

The Organizing and Advocacy Intern will work with Immigrant Rights Program staff to promote program vision and activities via organizing, outreach and education. The Organizing Intern will conduct outreach to recently arrived Black immigrant community members in the Newark metropolitan area to document the experience of Black migrants at the border and in accessing resources in New Jersey. The Organizing Intern will coordinate meetings with recently arrived immigrants or entities providing them support. The goal of this internship is to help tell the story of Black immigrants and share information on services and initiatives that can benefit Black immigrant communities. The Organizing and Advocacy Intern will also help create materials and manage social media as needed. Candidates with experience and knowledge of Black immigrant communities are encouraged to apply. 

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:   

  1. Conduct outreach to AFSC’s existing clients and other Black community members who have recently arrived in the U.S. from the southern border. 
  2. Help identify interviewees. 
  3. Help prepare questionnaires and informational material about social services and other initiatives available for Black immigrants. 
  4. Coordinate meetings with recently arrived immigrants or entities providing them support. 
  5. Support and participate in office wide organizing events when necessary. 
  6. Help coordinate community events that aim at engaging Black immigrants in immigration organizing. 
  7. Help create materials and manage social media as needed. 
  8. Meet regularly with supervisor. 

Qualifications: 

  1.  Strong interest in immigrants’ rights. 
  2. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in multicultural contexts. 
  3. Familiarity with the challenges facing Black immigrant communities.
  4. Good oral and written communication skills. 
  5. Ability to attend evening and weekend meetings in person or virtually. 
  6. Ability to communicate effectively and build mutually respectful relationships with co-workers, clients, and the public. 
  7. Ability to work effectively and comfortably with Quaker principles. 
  8. Self-motivated, detail oriented, well-organized, able to prioritize assignments and workload. 
  9. Personal experience and fluency in a foreign language in addition to English is a plus. 

Compensation:  $20.00 per hour. There are no medical, dental, or life insurance benefits, short-term or long-term insurance benefits with this position. AFSC does participate in unemployment, worker’s compensation, and social security.
