POSITION DESCRIPTION

TITLE:                                                             Healing Justice Intern

JOB CATEGORY:                                           Non-Exempt (Hourly)

STATUS:                                                         Part-Time, 21 Hours a week for 10 weeks during the summer of 2026

TYPE OF EMPLOYMENT:                            Temporary

DIRECT SUPERVISOR:                                 Healing Justice Program Director

REGION/UNIT:                                             US/Northeast Region

LOCATION:                                                    New York City, NY           Hybrid in New York

GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION

Amid today’s resurgence of grassroots organizing and heightened calls for racial justice, pointed efforts must be made to engage young people in local communities. The New York Office of the American Friends Service Committee will contribute to this effort during the summer of 2026. Our focus will be helping communities create new visions of policing justice and incarceration and empowering young people with the skills and strategies, including using the arts, to advocate for healing in our criminal and immigration legal systems. We are seeking an intern to join us in this work.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Assist in carrying out work of the Healing Justice Program in New York
  • Conduct outreach to past and potential Liberation Academy and Camp participants
  • Help create materials and manage social media as needed.
  • Participate in selected Camp sessions, including the possibility of limited travel
  • Support and participate in office wide organizing events.
  • Meet regularly with supervisor
  • Present on their internship experience
  • Participates in an exit interview at the end of the internship
  • Regular attendance and punctuality are required.
  • Operates safely in all conditions and follows policies and procedures.
  • Other duties and projects assigned.

SUPERVISORY / MANAGEMENT REQUIREMENTS

No direct supervisory responsibilities.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED required. Current student, undergraduate or graduate level preferred.
  • Mimimum experience working with criminal and/or immigration legal systems is preferred.
  • Experience working with young people aged 15-20.
  • Familiarity with various social media platforms.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work well and develop rapport with people from different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds in a virtual environment.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work in the evenings and/or weekends and to travel, as required.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and within a team environment.
  • Experience with standard Microsoft Office and related technology.
  • Must be capable of working under tight time constraints in a high-volume environment with multiple priorities.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the principles, concerns, and considerations, of AFSC in regard to issues of race, class, nationality, religion, age, gender and sexual orientation, and disabilities. Demonstrated ability to work and communicate with diverse staff.
  • Commitment to Quaker values and testimonies. Understanding of and compatibility with the principles and philosophy of the American Friends Service Committee including non-violence and the belief in the intrinsic worth of every individual.
  • Respect for and sensitivity to cultural, ethnic, racial, gender and religious diversity and familiarity with non-violent approaches to problem solving.
  • Ability to organize, plan ahead and prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the principles, concerns, and considerations of AFSC in regard to issues of race, class, nationality, religion, age, gender and sexual orientation, and disabilities.

 COMPENSATION

The AFSC offers a competitive Total Rewards package.  This position is Salary Family: Intern,  Job Code Intern. Starting Hourly Rate $20. There are no medical, dental, or life insurance benefits, short-term or long-term insurance benefits with this position. AFSC does participate in unemployment, worker’s compensation, and social security.
