This is an Air Reserve Technician (ART) position. ARTs are part of the regular career civil service and enjoy all the benefits granted to Federal employees in the competitive civil service. In addition, ARTs are required to maintain their active membership in the AF Reserve unit where assigned. ARTs receive on average one weekend of military training per month.

Qualifications:

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-8200-Fluid Systems Maintenance Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

The screen out element for this position is: the ability to do the work of an Aircraft Pneudraulic Systems Mechanic without more than normal supervision.

JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
  1. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Skill and knowledge in the use of standard hand and power tools/equipment, materials accounting and security.
  2. Ability to read and interpret a variety of technical data, and Knowledge of USAF Technical Order Program and its procedures. Ability to remove and install aircraft pneudraulic systems, equipment or accessories.
  3. Comprehensive knowledge of operation, capabilities and limitations of aircraft pneudraulic systems. Ability to use a variety of test and measurement equipment, ability to test complete pneudraulic systems.
  4. Ability to document in aircraft forms/MIS, clean work area and/or job site upon completion of work. Ability to overhaul, repair, calibrate or fabricate aircraft pneudraulic equipment. Ability to troubleshoot aircraft pneudraulic equipment of moderate complexity.
  5. Knowledge of safety and security requirements as outlined in applicable standards, regulations and technical orders.

OTHER SIGNIFICANT FACTS
Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance. Performs other related duties as assigned. May be required to fly in commercial and military aircraft to perform temporary/permanent duty assignments. This is and Air Reserve Technician (ART) position. The incumbent is required to meet and maintain Air Force Reserve requirements. Work schedule will be aligned to allow incumbent to fully participae in unit training assemblies (UTA). The incumbent's regular assignments are ART duties; however, the incumbent may be assigned some non-ART duties, generally not to exceed 30 perent of total responsibilities. May be required to work overtime, rotating shifts, uncommon tours, weekends, etc. May be required to work overtime, rotating shifts, uncommon tours, weekends, and etc. This is a testing designated position (TDP). The employee is subject to random drug testing.


FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Heavy lifting (45-79 pounds). Moderate lifting (15-44 lbs). Light lifting (under 15 lbs). Moderate carrying (15-44 lbs). Light carrying (under 15 lbs). Pushing and pulling. Reaching above shoulder. Use of fingers, both hands, arms, legs and feet are required. Walking, standing, crawling, kneeling, bending and climbing are required. Operation of special purpose and/or motor vehicles. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Near vision correctable at 13 inches to 16 inches to Jaeger 1 to 4. Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and 20/40 in the other. Both eyes required. Depth perception. Ability to distinguish basic colors. Hearing (with or without aid).

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Work is performed in hangar areas, outdoors, in/on aircraft, and sometimes in hazardous noise areas. Exposed to extremes in heat, cold, humidity and inclement weather. Must work in confined areas and in awkward positions. Exposed to bodily fluids, dirt, grease, and aircraft fluids (oil, hydraulic, fuel, sealants, solvents, hazardous fluids, particulates, and gases). Potentially exposed to Hydrazine, Halon, and/or composites, electrical shocks, RF radiation, explosive hazards and Low Observable (LO). Subject to eye damage due to exposure to LASERs. Subject to cuts, bruises, muscle strain, and injury from falls off scaffolds, ladders, and aircraft surfaces. Slippery or uneven walking surfaces. Working around machinery with moving parts. Working around moving objects or vehicles. May be exposed to intake suction and hot exhaust blast. Working closely with others or working alone.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Responsibilities:

The primary purpose of this position is: to serve as an Air Reserve Technician (ART) to test, troubleshoot, repair and modify aircraft pneudraulic systems and to provide training to reservists in the accomplishment of tasks set forth therein.

1. Receives work document(s) or oral instructions regarding problem with aircraft fuel system. Prepares effective training plans to maximize Reserve training.
2. Troubleshoots integral fuel tanks, using leak path analysis and other test procedures such as pressure checks, vacuum checks, dye injection checks, helium and argon gas checks, etc., to determine the source of fuel leaks.
3. Troubleshoots fuel cells to determine location of leaks. Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintians a safe and clean work area.
4. Accomplishes modifications and prepares components for storage or shipment.
5. In performing duties uses a variety of common hand tools, combustible and toxic gas indicators, torque wrenches, leak detectors, pressure gauges, manometers, powered tools such as drills and pneumatic wrenches; also, operates ATE such as blowers, filters, vacuum cleaners, heaters, air conditioners, fire extinguishers, etc.
