Position Summary
The funeral home secretary plays a vital role in the daily operations of the funeral home. This position provides administrative support to funeral directors, assists families with necessary documentation, coordinates schedules, and ensures the office runs smoothly and respectfully at all times.
Key Responsibilities
- Greet families and visitors with warmth, compassion, and professionalism
- Answer and direct phone calls; respond to inquiries and relay messages promptly
- Prepare, proofread, and file documents such as death certificates, obituaries, and service programs
- Schedule appointments, funeral services, and facility use
- Maintain accurate records and databases for client files and service arrangements
- Handle mail, billing, and payment processing
- Coordinate with florists, cemeteries, clergy, and other service providers
- Assist with preparation and setup for visitations and services as needed
- Maintain confidentiality and uphold the highest standards of discretion
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Bookkeeping experience
- Prior administrative or office experience required; funeral service experience a plus
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong attention to detail and organizational abilities
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and general office equipment
- Ability to handle sensitive situations with empathy, tact, and professionalism
- Must be dependable, punctual, and comfortable working in a compassionate care environment
- Must have dependable transportation
