The Boston Community Education Center (BCEC) is seeking an instructor to teach a HiSET (High School Equivalency Test) prep course to community members, many of whom may have limited English proficiency in the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston. This position is ideal for individuals interested in teaching while helping low-income and immigrant populations gain access to services and job opportunities.
Program schedule entails thirty to forty weeks of classes broken into 10-week cycles over the course of a year starting in April. Class schedule to be determined based on instructor and program availability. Classes likely to take place on weekday evenings. Total contact hours will total 2 hours per week. Instructors will be paid $90 per contact hour.
Experience in teaching HiSET or GED test prep courses (or similar test prep courses) is preferred. Candidates who are bilingual in Spanish and English are preferred. Experience in teaching English for Speakers of Other Languages is a plus.
Responsibilities will include:
- Creating weekly lesson plans based on provided program layout and resources
- Developing interactive activities and using other supporting materials as necessary to enhance students' classroom experience
- Actively engaging and interacting with students during classes and activities
- Recording weekly attendance
- Communicating with students, including class reminders, sharing materials, and other information as needed
- Assessing, recording, and reporting on student proficiency levels and progress through formal and informal assessment
This position requires candidates with the following qualifications:
- Experience in teaching HiSET or GED test prep courses (or similar test prep courses)
- Experience with curriculum design
- Ability to travel regularly to the Roxbury area of Boston
- A proactive, caring, positive, and energetic personality
In addition, ideal candidates possess the following qualities:
- A proactive work ethic and professional demeanor
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Spanish fluency
- Ability to work in a collaborative setting and willingness to apply feedback
- Comfortable with teaching in small to medium size classroom environments
