Position Overview

The Controls & Automation Engineer is responsible for designing and supporting automated systems used in cable handling and assembly operations. This role plays a key part in advancing automation initiatives, including autonomous cable loading, gantry-to-pan connection systems, intelligent pan stacking, and real-time defect detection during shipload operations.

This position works cross-functionally with mechanical, quality, and manufacturing engineering teams to ensure systems are production-ready, safe, reliable, and cost-effective. Flexibility to support off-shift operations is required based on business needs.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and maintain PLC-, industrial PC-, and robot-controlled automation systems
• Integrate motion control systems including servos, gantries, and position feedback devices
• Support machine vision systems for cable inspection and alignment
• Troubleshoot and resolve controls-related issues using structured problem-solving methods
• Develop and validate safety-critical controls, including interlocks and fail-safe systems
• Lead equipment commissioning, trials, and acceptance testing
• Collaborate with mechanical engineering on equipment design, guarding, and risk mitigation
• Analyze downtime data and drive continuous improvement initiatives
• Develop and maintain technical documentation (wiring diagrams, PLC code, O&M procedures)
• Update Standard Procedure Instruction Manuals (SPIMs) to reflect system changes and improvements
• Partner with Training & Certification teams to ensure accurate operator training materials
• Train operators and technicians on system operation and troubleshooting
• Identify opportunities to improve automation efficiency and reduce manual intervention
• Support additional projects and responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field preferred
• 3 years of hands-on experience in industrial automation or motion control (experience may substitute for degree)
• Strong PLC programming experience (Allen-Bradley or equivalent preferred)
• Experience with motion control systems and industrial automation hardware
• Knowledge of industrial networking and safety system design
• Experience integrating sensors, cameras, and machine vision systems
• Strong troubleshooting and analytical problem-solving skills
• Ability to collaborate effectively across all levels of the organization
• Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and mechanical drawings
• Proficiency with data acquisition tools and technical documentation systems
• Familiarity with Lean manufacturing or continuous improvement methodologies preferred
• Willingness to work flexible shifts as needed to support production
