100% Remote | Staff Accountant — Tax & Advisory Growth Track
Part-Time (Sept–Dec 2026) ...then
Full-Time, Year-Round (2027 )

About the Firm
Advanced Tax Consulting, Inc. is a Portland, Oregon tax and financial advisory practice serving individual and business clients, led by Theban L. Tonnesen, EA, LTC. The firm offers tax preparation, bookkeeping, payroll, and year-round advisory services, and is growing its team to support that client base.

Position Summary
We're looking for a recent accounting graduate who already has some accounting experience and wants to build a career in tax preparation and advisory. This role starts part-time this fall supporting bookkeeping and client services, converts to a full-time, benefits-eligible, year-round position in 2027 (not seasonal), and is designed to grow over time into a forward-facing Tax Advisor role as the employee completes QuickBooks ProAdvisor certification, Oregon tax preparer licensing, and (longer-term) CPA and/or Enrolled Agent credentials.

The role is 100% remote, and the firm caps work weeks at 40 hours year-round — including tax season — rather than the 50–60-hour tax-season weeks common at comparable local firms.

Employment Timeline:
Phase 1 — Part-Time Trainee: September through December 2026, 100% remote, hourly, no health or 401k benefits, PTO and Sick-time and Holiday compensation prorated by hours

Phase 2 — Full-Time Associate: beginning in 2027, 100% remote, standard 40-hour/week schedule year-round, benefits-eligible, intended as a permanent full-time role rather than a seasonal one.

Phase 3 — Tax Advisor: timing tied to licensing and experience milestones rather than a fixed date

Responsibilities:
Phase 1 — Part-Time Trainee (Fall 2026)
Support bookkeeping and data entry for client accounts
Help organize client documents and prepare extension filings
Begin QuickBooks Online Certified ProAdvisor training and certification
Learn firm systems, tax and portal software, and client-service standards
General administrative and tax-season support

Phase 2 — Full-Time Associate (2027)
Complete QuickBooks Online Certified ProAdvisor certification, if not already finished
Complete Oregon's 80-hour Board-approved income tax course and pass Licensed Tax Preparer (LTP) exam
Prepare individual and business tax returns and extensions under the direct supervision of the firm's EA/LTC
Process client payroll and payroll corrections
Continue and expand bookkeeping responsibilities across a growing client list
Begin limited, supervised client communication (phone/Zoom)

Phase 3 — Tax Advisor (future, milestone-based)
Obtain Licensed Tax Consultant (LTC) status (Oregon requires roughly 1,100 hours plus exam)
Pursue CPA licensure and/or Enrolled Agent (EA) credential
Take on a forward-facing Tax Advisor role with direct client ownership: tax planning conversations, tax return review, supervision of staff accountants, and advisory work
Sign returns, supervise team of support staff, assume progressive managerial roles

Qualifications Required:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting (or actively completing one)
Prior accounting coursework and/or hands-on accounting/bookkeeping experience
Genuine interest in building a career in tax preparation and advisory services
Proficient MS Office and Adobe Acrobat Pro; comfortable learning new software (QuickBooks, ProConnect)
Strong attention to detail and comfort handling confidential financial information
*(required) Reliable high-speed internet and a quiet home workspace suitable for remote client and firm work

Reliable and consistent availability (flextime) for part-time hours September–December 2026, with intent to move to full-time in 2027

Preferred:
Prior internship, part-time, or work experience in bookkeeping, accounting, or tax preparation
Familiarity with QuickBooks and ProConnect or Lacerte Tax Software
Coursework toward CPA eligibility, or a stated interest in pursuing CPA and/or EA licensure

Growth Path & Professional Development:
QuickBooks Online Certified ProAdvisor — free through a QuickBooks Online Accountant account; commonly completed in roughly 8–20 hours of self-paced training.

Oregon Licensed Tax Preparer (LTP) — 80-hour Board-approved basic income tax course plus a passing exam score (75% ); an apprenticeship-level license that lets the holder prepare personal income tax returns under the supervision of a Licensed Tax Consultant.

Longer-term: CPA licensure and/or Enrolled Agent (EA) credential, supporting the transition into the forward-facing Tax Advisor role.

Schedule & Location:
100% remote, Standard 40-hour week, year-round — including tax season. No scheduled overtime beyond 40 hours is expected in-season or off-season; this is a deliberate work-life-balance commitment

Phase 1 part-time hours: Consistent and Reliable but Flextime, roughly 15–25 hours/week
Beginning 2027: full-time, 40 hours/week, year-round — intended as a permanent role, not a seasonal one.
