POSITION TITLE: Controller
POSITION SUMMARY:
Reporting directly to the Chief Financial & Operations Officer (CFOO), the Controller serves as the senior leader responsible for the accuracy and strategic value of the organization’s financial operations. The role provides oversite of accounting, financial reporting, compliance, internal controls, and team leadership. The Controller ensures that financial systems and processes support organizational goals, enable data driven decision making, and meet all regulatory, audit and funder requirements.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Leadership, Management, & Organizational Development
- Provide strategic leadership to the finance function, ensuring operational excellence, accountability and a high-performing team culture.
- Define and communicate clear departmental roles, responsibilities, and performance expectations aligned with organizational priorities.
- Delegate oversight responsibilities to develop staff capacity and strengthen succession pathways within the finance team.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement, collaboration, and innovation; provide coaching, mentorship, and structured feedback to support professional growth.
- Cultivate a collaborative environment that encourages cross-functional learning, innovation, and shared success
- Partner with HR to identify and develop high-potential talent and support long-term workforce planning.
- Model a growth-oriented leadership mindset through ongoing professional development, executive education, and industry engagement.
- Regularly assess personal leadership style and effectiveness through feedback, coaching and self-reflection
- Communicate with clarity, transparency, and empathy to build trust and alignment across all levels of the organization.
Financial Close, Reporting & Strategic Analysis
- Lead and own month-end close process, ensuring timely and accurate completion by the 10th business day of each month; including billing, grant reconciliations, journal entries, and financial statement preparation
- Oversee analysis of monthly balance sheet activity; guide staff in investigating and resolving significant variances
- Review agency-wide and program-level Statement of Activities providing meaningful variance analysis and insights for leadership
- Present monthly and quarterly financial results to the Finance Committee and Board of Directors; meet regularly with the CFOO and Board Treasurer to review financial performance, discuss risks, and support strategic decision-making.
- Oversee maintenance of fixed asset records including additions, disposals and depreciation schedules
- Review and approve key bank and balance sheet reconciliations
- Prepare cash flow projection, financial forecasts and scenario analysis to support strategic planning
- Conduct cost allocation analysis and identify opportunities to optimize spending and redirect resources to mission-critical services
- Ensure timely, accurate and relevant financial reporting to the CFOO, CEO, Board Of Directors, funding partners, and federal and state regulatory agencies
Financial Operations, Compliance & Organizational Support
- Provides oversite of Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable functions including, but not limited to, check runs, ACH payment processing and gift card distribution
- Maintain full oversight of the general ledger ensuring accuracy, completeness and compliance with GAAP
- Review and approve journal entries, cash receipts and bank reconciliations prepared by accounting staff
- Oversee the monthly Accounts Receivables Aging review and ensure timely submission to the CFOO
- Oversee preparation, reconciliation, and review of monthly grant reimbursement billings and expenditures; ensure accuracy and compliance prior to CFOO and CEO approval
- Ensure adherence to grant requirements, including allowable costs, documentation standards, and proper general ledger segregation.
- Prepare grant budgets, financial reports, and funder audits.
- Review Grants Register and its reconciliation to the general ledger, prepared by accounting team
- Provide oversight of special events reconciliation between accounting and fundraising system
- Support financial operations during the annual gala and other major events.
- Oversee payroll processing and collaborate with the HR Director to ensure accuracy, compliance and timely approvals
- Partner with the CFOO in developing and managing the agency’s annual operating budget and program budgets
- Support grant audits, financial statement audits, and preparations of IRS Form 990
- Lead ongoing cost allocation analysis to ensure accurate implementation across departments
- Respond to strategic financial requests and special projects assigned by the CFOO

- Actively participate in all agency staff meetings, team meetings and collaborative projects to support organizational goals and build professional skills
- Seek and incorporate coaching and feedback to support continuous professional development.
- Demonstrate accountability by understanding and fulfilling defined responsibilities and performance expectations

Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Certification
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance or Accounting
- Certified Public Accounting (CPA) licensure
Experience
- Minimum of eight (8) years’ experience in accounting and three (3) years’ experience supervising staff
- Expertise in accounting principles and practices, financial markets and banking
- Strong expertise in financial statements and financial reporting
Technical Proficiency
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel (intermediate – advanced), Outlook and SharePoint
- Skilled in specialized accounting software (experience with MIP and Ramp a plus)
- Ability to learn and master multiple software applications quickly

- Excellent written and oral communication skills

Working Conditions

- Hybrid work schedule eligibility may be considered following a 90-day probationary period and subject to supervisor approval

- Standard office hours are 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with some flexibility based on operational needs.
Compensation: $100,000–$120,000 annually, depending on experience.
