Supervisor of K-8 Mathematics and Science Instruction

Non-union, at-will position

 

POSITION SUMMARY

 

The Supervisor of K-8 Mathematics and Science Instruction will serve as an instructional leader and coach, working directly with elementary (and middle school) teachers to improve instruction in mathematics and science. This position will spend significant time in K–8 classrooms providing demonstration lessons, coaching teachers in evidence-based instructional practices, and facilitating professional development aligned with Michigan Academic Standards, particularly the implementation of Michigan's Math Essentials program and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The successful candidate will collaborate closely with district administrators and teachers to implement rigorous, engaging instruction in mathematics and science.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Classroom Modeling & Coaching: Spend significant time in K–5 classrooms delivering demonstration lessons, co-teaching, and providing real-time coaching to teachers implementing Michigan Math Essentials and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), disciplinary core ideas, practices, and crosscutting concepts.

Professional Development: Provide targeted professional development sessions on effective mathematics and science instruction aligned with Michigan Math Essentials and NGSS frameworks, including cooperative learning strategies and project-based learning.

Instructional Support: Support teachers in integrating inquiry-based science aligned with NGSS and conceptual mathematics practices aligned with Michigan Math Essentials.

Curriculum Alignment: Collaborate with district instructional leaders and administrators to align curriculum, instruction, and assessment across K–8 programs.

Program Implementation: Model and coach implementation of instructional programs, including Math Essentials, PLTW (Project Lead The Way) curriculum, and Kagan cooperative learning structures.

Observation & Feedback: Observe lessons, conduct post-observation conferences, and provide actionable feedback focused on student engagement and learning outcomes.

Collaboration: Coordinate professional learning communities and teacher learning networks across the region.

Resource Development: Contribute to the development of professional development materials and resources.

Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Master's Degree in Education, Educational Leadership, Curriculum & Instruction, or related field

Valid Michigan elementary or K–8 teaching certification

Highly Qualified in Mathematics and/or Science (or equivalent demonstrated expertise)

Minimum three (3) to five (5) years of successful K–8 classroom teaching and/or instructional coaching experience

Demonstrated knowledge of Michigan Academic Standards in mathematics and science

Required knowledge of Michigan's Math Essentials program and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) framework

Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams and stakeholders

Strong focus on continuous improvement and evidence-based practices

Demonstrated skill in managing multiple projects and meeting established timelines

Proficiency with technology tools (including AI) used to support professional learning (Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, virtual meeting platforms, learning management systems)

Commitment to ongoing professional learning and growth

Strong interpersonal and communication skills

Ability to build trust and credibility with teachers

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience or expertise in both mathematics and science instruction

Background knowledge of NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards) and Michigan Science Standards frameworks

Experience with instructional coaching models or teacher mentoring

Knowledge of or experience with Kagan or Adaptive Schools cooperative learning strategies

Knowledge of or experience with PLTW (Project Lead The Way) programs

Deep familiarity with Math Essentials high-leverage instructional practices and mathematics intervention/enrichment strategies

Experience with data-driven instruction and formative assessment practices aligned with NGSS and Math Essentials

Facilitator training or experience leading professional development focused on NGSS or Math Essentials

Experience supporting teachers in grades K–8 (elementary and middle school settings)

Background in science inquiry-based instruction, NGSS engineering design practices, or related training

 

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED

Deep understanding of K–8 mathematics and science content and pedagogical approaches aligned with Michigan Math Essentials and NGSS

Facility with Michigan disciplinary core ideas, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts

Knowledge of high-leverage instructional practices specific to Michigan Math Essentials

Expertise in cooperative learning and student engagement strategies

Proficiency in demonstration teaching and constructive coaching

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Ability to provide feedback that is specific, actionable, and focused on growth

Familiarity with current educational technology and digital learning tools

Demonstrated ability to lead professional development and facilitate learning

Culturally responsive teaching practices and commitment to educational equity

Strong organizational and time management skills

 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The employee must be able to stand, sit, bend, twist, lift and walk as needed to perform all essential job functions.

 

 

Employment Date:          July 1, 2026; 241-day work calendar

Compensation:                $90,000-$92,000 (commensurate with experience/expertise)
