Summary:
As a Mechanical Engineer within the RL-R Engineering team, you will help translate innovative machine perception concepts into advanced sensing hardware designs through rapid prototyping and iterative development. This role requires someone who thrives in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment and enjoys working across emerging technologies, product development, manufacturing, and scalable design solutions. The ideal candidate will have a strong product mindset along with hands-on prototyping expertise and experience driving concepts from prototype to volume production.
Key Responsibilities:
- Drive rapid prototyping efforts to deliver multiple design iterations within short development cycles.
- Lead end-to-end discussions on system assembly process selection, prototyping strategy, tooling, and equipment requirements for high-precision assemblies.
- Collaborate with external equipment manufacturers, suppliers, and system integrators to support technology development and deployment.
- Support process validation studies and proof-of-concept builds.
- Contribute to:
- FMEA (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis)
- Failure analysis
- Tolerance analysis
- Gauge R&R
- GD&T activities
- Ensure designs meet mechanical, optical, and reliability requirements.
- Continuously expand expertise in sensing systems, manufacturing processes, scalability, and new technologies.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent practical experience.
- Mechanical or optomechanical background with hands-on experience in:
- High-precision alignment process development
- Optical imaging, display, or sensing assemblies
- Rapid prototyping
- Experience designing consumer technology products.
- 3 years of experience using 3D CAD software within a document-controlled environment.
- Experience working with international equipment vendors and contract manufacturers.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with NX and/or SolidWorks.
- Master’s or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.
- Experience with wearable electronics packaging technologies.
- Experience owning designs from concept to production for:
- Optical-mechanical components
- Cameras
- Related sensing systems
- Knowledge of image processing and optical display metrics such as:
- MTF
- Contrast
- Luminance
- Uniformity
- Experience designing and prototyping:
- Head-mounted optical systems
- Bench-top optical setups
- Knowledge of:
- Component/module mounting
- Interfaces
- Adhesive bonding
- Electrical system drivers
- Automation equipment operations
- Experience with structural analysis, stress analysis, and FEA.

Pay Transparency: The typical base pay for this role across the U.S. is: $70.00 - $80.00 /hr. Non-exempt positions are eligible for overtime at a rate of 1.5 times the base hourly rate for all hours worked in excess of 40 in a work week, or as required by state or local law. Final offer amounts, within the base pay set forth above, are determined by factors including your relevant skills, education and experience. Full-time employees are eligible to select from different benefits packages.
