Job Summary Overview:
The Controls Systems Technician I is an entry-level position responsible for assisting in the installation, wiring, programming, and commissioning of building automation systems (BAS) and HVAC controls. Under direct supervision, this technician learns to work with low-voltage systems, control panels, sensors, and HVAC equipment integration. The Controls Systems Technician I supports senior technicians and engineers in implementing projects that improve building efficiency, occupant comfort, and system reliability.
Responsibilities
Assist with wire runs, mounting devices, and connecting basic thermostats.
Learn control system basics including thermostats, sensors, and relays.
Identify issues with guidance (e.g., faulty thermostats, loose wires, signal loss).
Perform basic maintenance: change batteries, reset thermostats, and check connections.
Observe layouts to avoid pipe or duct conflicts during installation.
Read and follow simple wiring and layout diagrams with supervision.
Identify and learn about manual dampers and simple control valves.
Record installation data, time, and materials used.
Follow OSHA, NEC Class 2, ladder safety, and tool safety requirements.
Listen, follow directions, ask questions, and contribute to team success.

Basic understanding of HVAC controls and electrical fundamentals.
Willingness to learn new technologies and troubleshooting techniques.
Ability to work safely on ladders and construction sites.

Education & Certifications
High school diploma or GED preferred.
OSHA 10 certification (or ability to obtain within 90 days).
EPA 608 Type I (in progress or ability to obtain).
Basic thermostat installation training a plus.
