About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Cost Accountant to join our accounting and project operations team. This role is responsible for job cost tracking, WIP analysis, budget vs. actual reporting, subcontractor cost management, and ensuring accurate project financials. The ideal candidate has hands-on construction accounting experience, strong understanding of job costing, and the ability to collaborate closely with project managers.
Key Responsibilities
• Maintain accurate job cost records for multiple projects across various phases
• Prepare monthly WIP (Work-in-Progress) schedules and analyze cost variances
• Track project budgets, committed costs, labor hours, and change orders
• Monitor subcontractor invoices, purchase orders, lien releases, and retainage
• Process AIA billing, progress billings, and assist with draw packages
• Reconcile project-related accounts and support month-end close
• Prepare job cost reports for project managers and senior leadership
• Review timecards, equipment costs, and overhead allocations for accuracy
• Assist with forecasting and cash flow projections for active projects
• Support project audits and ensure compliance with internal controls
• Partner with Project Managers to improve cost visibility and profitability
Must-Have Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
• 3–5 years of cost accounting experience within the construction industry
• Strong knowledge of job costing, WIP, AIA billing, change orders, retainage, and project accounting
• Experience working with construction accounting software (e.g., Viewpoint/Vista, Sage 300 CRE, CMiC, Procore, Timberline)
• Strong Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, data analysis)
• Understanding of GAAP and project cost principles
• Excellent communication skills and ability to partner with project teams
