About the Opportunity:
We’re partnering with a growing, multi-state, private equity-backed organization seeking a Controller to join its Finance & Accounting team.
This is a key leadership role supporting the organization’s financial operations, reporting, compliance, and continued growth. The Controller will oversee and support accurate and timely financial reporting, monthly and annual close processes, audits, tax compliance, budgeting, and internal controls.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on accounting leader who is highly organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a fast-paced, growth-oriented environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support and oversee the monthly close process, including journal entries, account reconciliations, variance analysis, and close timelines.
- Lead monthly closing calls and collaborate with corporate and field operations teams across multiple states and business units.
- Assist with month-end and year-end financial reporting in accordance with GAAP and internal reporting standards.
- Support annual audits by preparing schedules, coordinating documentation, and responding to auditor requests.
- Coordinate documentation and requests related to annual tax filings and external tax advisors.
- Prepare and file annual net profit and property tax returns, including extension filings and related compliance requirements.
- Manage monthly sales tax filings and support ongoing multi-state tax compliance.
- Prepare quarterly regulatory and incentive-related filings.
- Manage required industry licenses and certifications and research requirements related to new markets and geographies.
- Support accounting, integration, and compliance activities related to acquisitions, new locations, and geographic expansion.
- Review customer and vendor credit applications and coordinate approval documentation.
- Manage the corporate credit card program, including administration, policy compliance, reporting, and issue resolution.
- Assist with annual budgeting, including corporate department budgets, templates, and financial analysis.
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, strengthen internal controls, and increase efficiency across corporate and field finance operations.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
- CPA required.
- Minimum of 4 years of relevant accounting experience.
- Prior experience managing and developing accounting staff preferred.
- Strong understanding of GAAP, month-end close, account reconciliations, and financial reporting.
- Experience with sales tax, property tax, business licensing, or other multi-jurisdictional compliance preferred.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage recurring monthly and annual deadlines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to partner effectively with leadership, operations, auditors, tax advisors, and other stakeholders.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and accounting/ERP systems.
- Working knowledge of ASC 842 lease accounting preferred.
- Experience with business combinations and purchase accounting preferred.
- Experience with construction accounting, including job costing, WIP reporting, and percentage-of-completion accounting, preferred.
