What are the responsibilities and job description for the Quantum Sensing Research Scientist - PhD position at ADAPT Technology LLC.?
***This is a Temporary Role Scheduled to Finish Towards the End of March 2026***
We are seeking a passionate and innovative researcher to join our advanced quantum technology team. In this role, you will design, build, and optimize state-of-the-art optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) systems using nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers and other quantum defects. You’ll contribute to cutting-edge research that pushes the boundaries of quantum sensing, developing novel methods for measuring magnetic and electric fields, temperature, and pressure with unprecedented precision.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and Implementation: Develop ODMR-based quantum sensing systems and enhance confocal microscopy setups for quantum applications.
- Research & Innovation: Explore new sensing protocols and quantum modalities to improve sensitivity, spatial, and temporal resolution.
- Applied Quantum Development: Investigate opportunities to apply quantum techniques beyond sensing applications.
- Experimental Design: Plan and execute experiments to evaluate quantum sensor performance across various environmental conditions.
- Miniaturization & Integration: Lead efforts to transition benchtop systems into compact, integrated photonic platforms, incorporating miniaturized lasers, photodetectors, and optical components.
- Collaboration & Communication: Work cross-functionally to deliver prototypes, intellectual property, and publications. An enthusiasm for publishing and presenting research is strongly encouraged.
- Safety & Culture: Support and uphold a strong workplace safety culture and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications
***This is a Temporary Role Scheduled to Finish Towards the End of March 2026***
- Education: Ph.D. in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Quantum Systems Expertise: Deep understanding of quantum defects (e.g., NV centers, SiC defects), spin physics, and quantum sensing protocols.
- Optical Engineering Skills: Hands-on experience with lasers, optical design, confocal microscopy, free-space alignment, and photon detection.
- Instrumentation Experience: Proficiency with microwave electronics, lock-in amplifiers, and precision measurement and data acquisition systems.
- Programming: Strong proficiency in Python, MATLAB, or equivalent tools for data analysis and instrument control.
- Communication: Ability to clearly present research findings through visual data, mathematical analysis, and written reports.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in integrated photonics design and simulation (e.g., Lumerical, COMSOL).
- Familiarity with electronics design and packaging.
- Understanding of quantum communication concepts such as squeezed light and entangled photons.
