Position Summary
Location: Remote or Chicago, IL Office
The Commodity Risk & Position Analyst plays a critical role in supporting Adams Group’s integrated grain and specialty oil supply chain. This position serves as the analytical and operational backbone for the Sourcing Team, responsible for reconciling hedge positions, analyzing trade data, and ensuring accurate position reporting across both grain and oil ingredient portfolios.
The role bridges commodity merchandising, sourcing, and finance, ensuring that all sourcing activities align with Adams Group’s commitment to transparency, data integrity, and sustainable growth. The manager will leverage advanced Excel and business intelligence tools to manage data systems, drive operational accuracy, and deliver insights that optimize supply chain performance for both bulk and specialty ingredients.
Key Responsibilities
Hedge & Position Management
- Serve as the owner of the central hedge desk, maintaining alignment between physical and financial positions across grain and oil portfolios.
- Perform daily position reconciliation, ensuring accurate reporting and compliance with accounting and risk policies.
- Monitor and report on hedge efficiency and basis exposure across wheat, corn, sorghum and soybeans.
- Collaborate with Sourcing Managers, and finance to ensure all positions are accurately captured and reflected in ERP and BI systems.
- Demonstrate strong understanding of P&L management, mark-to-market (MTM), and lower-of-cost-or-market (LCM) accounting principles to ensure accurate valuation of inventory and hedge positions.
Data Management & Analytics
- Manage data integration from USDA and other trade data providers, ensuring accuracy and consistency.
- Partner with IT to build and automate dashboards in ERP, Excel, Power BI for position tracking and risk performance metrics.
- Perform import/export and trade flow analysis to support sourcing decisions and global supply strategy.
Market & Sourcing Support
- Support Sourcing teams with basis, freight and spread analysis to identify sourcing opportunities and optimize landed costs.
- Develop cost models that connect origin price, freight, and delivery costs across multiple supply regions.
- Assist in developing forecasting tools for supply/demand trends and sourcing balance sheets.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with Finance, Accounting, Supply Chain, Sustainability, and Operations to align data accuracy and ensure traceable sourcing across the supply chain.
- Provide analytical support for sustainability reporting, regenerative ag metrics, and traceability documentation.
- Collaborate with IT and business process owners to enhance ERP data integrity and reporting workflows.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify and implement process automation and data standardization improvements to streamline reporting and reduce manual reconciliation errors.
- Drive innovation through data-driven solutions supporting Adams Group’s “Integrity from Seed to Shelf” commitment to operational excellence.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Agribusiness, Agricultural Economics, Finance, Supply Chain Management, or related field.
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in grain, oilseed, or ingredient merchandising, sourcing or commodity risk management.
- Experience with hedging, position management, and futures/options trading (CBOT, CME, ICE).
- Advanced Excel skills (VBA, Power Query, Pivot Tables, macros, complex formulas).
- Ability to reconcile merchandising P&L against monthly accounting statements.
Preferred
- Experience with Power BI for position management and risk reporting.
- Demonstrated understanding of grain origination, oilseed crush, and specialty oil sourcing.
- Ability to model crush margins, basis spreads, and freight arbitrage for both grain and oil ingredients.
- Strong understanding of commodity market fundamentals and supply & demand drivers.
Salary : $100,000 - $120,000
