A Highway Worker I - Under direction, performs a variety of semi-skilled maintenance and repair duties in support of assigned County Department, Division, or program, with a primary focus on traffic-related infrastructure. Work will generally be performed in the Public Rights of Way (ROW), maintaining and repairing County-owned or maintained traffic control systems, signage, and pavement markings.
The anticipated hiring range for this role is $23.26 - $26.75. The full salary range for this role is $23.26 - $32.57.

- Perform a full range of semi-skilled maintenance duties related to traffic control, including installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signs, pavement markings, guardrails, and traffic signals.
- Operate equipment such as pavement marking machines, sign fabrication equipment, sweepers, loaders, backhoes, and tandem axle dump trucks to support traffic safety operations.
- Set up, maintain, and remove temporary traffic control devices, including barricades, cones, and signs, in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
- Perform daily pre-check and post-check inspections of equipment to ensure safe operation; conduct routine maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Fabricate, install, and maintain traffic signs and barricades; paint and maintain crosswalks, bike lanes, and other pavement markings to enhance road safety.
- Conduct traffic control flagging and direct vehicular traffic as needed to ensure worker and public safety.
- Respond to public inquiries related to traffic signage, road markings, and safety concerns in a courteous manner.
- Remove traffic obstructions, such as debris or illegally placed signs, to maintain clear visibility and safe passage.
- Participate in emergency response efforts, including assisting with road closures, detours, and traffic incident management during storms and other hazardous conditions.
- Ensure that all work is performed according to applicable safety regulations, including OSHA standards and environmental laws.
- Knowledge of traffic control systems, road signage, pavement markings, and related safety measures.
- Ability to follow safety practices and comply with OSHA regulations and environmental laws related to traffic infrastructure maintenance.
- Understanding of traffic control techniques, including the ability to set up and maintain work zones per MUTCD guidelines.
- Proficiency in record-keeping and reporting concerning time, materials, and completed projects.
- Familiarity with GIS-based sign management and sign fabrication software.
- Ability to work in extreme weather conditions, around traffic hazards, and in high-noise environments.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor and safely operate power tools and equipment used in traffic infrastructure maintenance.
- Read and interpret maps, sketches, and technical manuals related to traffic systems and roadway safety.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
Education and Training: Formal or informal education or training ensuring the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance, including completion of specialized training in traffic control and maintenance, is required.
Experience: Six (6) months of experience in field maintenance, traffic control, civil construction, heavy equipment operation, or a closely related field is preferred.
License or Certificate:
- A valid CO Driver’s License or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
- A Class B CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements is required within three (3) months of employment.
Adams County is required by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations to conduct pre-employment and ongoing random drug screenings, background checks, and motor vehicle record checks.
Applicants must have an accident-free record (Occupational and MVR) for a minimum of twelve months at the time of application.
Background Check: Must pass a criminal background check.
Other:
- Essential positions require availability for shift work, on-call, and stand-by call, especially during weather events and emergencies.
- Ability to provide coverage on holidays may be required.
- Optional overtime is available; periodic mandatory overtime may be required.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift objects up to 50 pounds regularly and 100 pounds occasionally.
