Assists veterans and their families in the filing of claims for insurance, pensions, compensation for disability, hospitalization, vocational training, or any other state or federal benefits which such person may be or may have been entitled to receive under the laws of the United States or the state of Colorado by reason of military service. It is the duty of the County Assistant Veterans Service Officer to assist any resident of the state of Colorado who is a veteran, or their surviving spouse, administrator, executor, guardian, conservator, or heir of any said veteran, or any other person who may have proper claim. Outreach to veterans at senior centers, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and resource fairs is another major responsibility of this position.
 
  • Handles administrative requests for the Veteran Services division, schedules appointments and performs administrative tasks for Veteran Services.
  • Reviews and processes claim for eligible veterans, including veteran, spouse or dependent claims, pension claims, disability claims, death benefits, education assistance, vocational rehabilitation, fiduciary accounts, medical services, debt waiver requests, and discharge upgrades. Obtains supporting documentation, reviews claim before filing and assists with appeals.
  • Performs outreach activities, resource promotion, and claims assistance to the local veteran community alongside Veteran Services program administration.
  • Assists in the County coordination with the VA Regional Office, Colorado Division of Military Affairs, Division of Veterans Affairs, other County Veterans Service Offices, VA Medical Center, metro shelters, and any other state and local agency regarding veteran services, benefits, and other veteran related activities. Coordinates services for homeless veterans and those needing medical care.
  • Assists in service delivery and client interactions with other County Departments, Community Partners, and other service providers, on behalf of veterans. Participates in meetings and community events to represent Adams County regarding veterans' services.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending State mandated training and retaining Veteran Service Officer accreditation 
  • Serve as a Subject Matter Expert for specialty projects involving veterans when assigned by the Veteran Service Officer
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities as required.
  • Extensive knowledge of federal and state rules and regulations regarding veteran benefits, services, and filing/appeals processes. Ability to apply such rules and regulations to individual cases.
  • A working knowledge of other human services programs and services available to veterans and families.
  • General knowledge of medical terminology for reviewing and filing claims regarding medical conditions.
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems.
  • Ability to analyze complex regulations and apply to client situations.
  • Ability to redirect and calm volatile clients.
  • Ability/Skill to speak publicly and to convey complex topics to the audience.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to make decisions on a program level for case processing.
  • Ability to establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to effectively operate computer applications and work within State and/or Federal databases, programs, and software specific to duties.
  • Ability to comprehend and comply with county policies and procedures.
  • Experience: 
    • At least one (1) year experience in human services or veterans’ services field.
    • Experience with the federal VA system (education, claims processing, readjustment counseling, labor or employment of veterans etc.) preferred.
  • Education and Training: High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • License or Certificate: 
    • Colorado Driver's License.
    • Colorado State VA Accreditation preferred.
  • Background Check: Must pass a criminal background check.
  • Other: 
    • State Residency: At the time of appointment, candidate must be a legal resident of the state of Colorado.

Ability to obtain, maintain, and ensure continued access to State and County systems in strict compliance with all applicable county and state regulations, policies, and user agreements.

Salary : $54,754 - $62,967
