A Sheriff's Labor Detail (SLD) Officer is responsible for the daily supervision, accountability, safety, and work coordination of program participants assigned to community service projects throughout Ada County.  Duties include conducting roll call, security screenings, participant assignments, random alcohol testing, transportation, documentation, and communication with partner agencies and case managers.  The SLD Officer oversees participant conduct, ensures compliance with program rules, monitors worksite safety, coordinates roadway and community improvement projects, maintains equipment, and supplies, and serves as a liaison between the Sheriff's Office staff, and community partners.  This position requires strong leadership, sound judgment, effective communication, and a commitment to public safety while promoting participant accountability and successful completion of assigned work programs.  The position is located at the Ada County Sheriff's Office, Court Services Bureau.

SHIFT INFORMATION 
Must be available to work 7 days of the week, typically day shift hours but will have some event swing shifts.

  • Supervises participants in the SLD program at various job sites;
  • Enforces program rules to maintain security and safety of labor detail participants;
  • Conducts a daily check-in of individuals to ensure they are physically capable to perform assigned tasks;
  • Ensures participants are prepared for their assigned job and properly outfitted for the weather conditions;
  • Transports participants safely to job site through the use of either a passenger van or passenger bus;
  • Obtains and maintains applicable Commercial Driver's License (CDL);
  • Ability to safely operate a bus or other large vehicle with a trailer, including turning and backing in tight spaces;
  • Utilizes computer software to maintain accurate records and payment logs;
  • Evaluates and mitigates potential risk events associated with the SLD program;
  • Performs related work as required.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
  • Coordinates with external stakeholders for daily work crew placement, nature of work to be completed and tools necessary for each project;
  • Attend regularly schedule safety briefings; and
  • Conducts regular work site audits.
  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • Previous experience working with and/or supervising criminal offenders preferred;
  • Must be at least 21 years of age;
  • Must be able to work weekends and some holidays;
  • Must be able to utilize good verbal skills to de-escalate confrontational situations;
  • Must have a valid and current driver's license;
  • Must have or be able to obtain, a Class "A" or "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement and air brake endorsement;
  • Knowledge of computer systems, file structure, and thorough knowledge of MS Office;
  • Skill in report writing and record keeping;
  • Ability to supervise offenders effectively;
  • Ability to obtain first aid and CPR certifications;
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing;
  • Ability to quickly react to changes in schedule due to unforeseen circumstances;
  • Ability to evaluate and recognize potential adverse or unsafe situations and react according to department policy; and
  • Ability to perform the duties of the position without a direct threat to the health or safety of the incumbent or others.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Must appear before an oral board and successfully complete a polygraph and background investigation prior to hire;
  • Must receive a negative pre-employment drug test per the Department of transportation drug and alcohol requirements;
  • This position will be required to participate in state mandated drug and alcohol screening.
  • Most of the work is performed throughout Ada County will take place outdoors and may involve potential exposure to extreme weather conditions;
  • Must be able to lift in excess of 50 lbs.;
  • Must be able to perform physical activity that requires the ability to balance, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, push, pull and grasp;
  • Requires the ability to stand for long periods of time and walk for several miles per shift.
