Job Description
This Phlebotomist II position focuses on performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collection while supporting laboratory operations across multiple clinic locations. The role combines hands-on venipuncture and specimen processing with troubleshooting, training, and workflow improvement, ensuring accurate, timely, and compassionate service for patients ranging from pediatric to geriatric.
Responsibilities
- Perform blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, ensuring safe and accurate venipuncture for patients from pediatric through geriatric age groups.
- Collect blood and other specimens, including urine and fecal samples as required, following established procedures and protocols.
- Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients, helping them understand the process and feel at ease.
- Label specimen tubes accurately and match them to laboratory requisition forms to ensure correct patient and test identification.
- Centrifuge, split, freeze, and otherwise process specimens as required by specific test orders to maintain specimen integrity.
- Record maintenance data, decontaminate work areas and equipment, and update patient information accurately and promptly.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against orders or scripts to ensure 100% accuracy before processing or transport.
- Package specimens appropriately for transport and store them at the required temperature in the correct collection containers or tubes.
- Follow specific procedures and protocols for labeling and handling specimens to preserve their integrity during storage and transport.
- Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct tests and procedures are performed.
- Answer telephone calls, provide laboratory results when appropriate, and respond to inquiries in a professional and courteous manner.
- Attend required annual department trainings and maintain up-to-date knowledge of procedures and regulations.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations, as well as internal safety and quality standards.
- Support workflow by identifying issues, troubleshooting problems, and making recommendations to improve efficiency and quality.
- Handle a high volume of work, typically managing approximately 30–40 blood draws per shift while maintaining accuracy and patient care standards.
- Work primarily with adult and geriatric patients, while also performing pediatric collections including heel sticks on babies as needed.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 1–2 years of experience as a phlebotomist.
- 1–2 years of experience performing blood draws on pediatric through geriatric patients, including heel sticks on babies.
- Proficiency with straight needle blood draws and venipuncture techniques.
- Demonstrated ability to perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, and process samples according to test requirements.
- Ability to work independently and manage approximately 30–40 blood draws per shift.
- Strong multitasking and critical thinking skills to prioritize tasks and resolve issues in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills, with the ability to explain procedures clearly and courteously to patients.
- Ability to accurately match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify orders against scripts or computer labels.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $19.00 - $23.00/hr.
