What are the responsibilities and job description for the Test Engineer position at Actalent?
Job Title: Test Engineer
Job Description
This hands-on Test Engineer role owns how products are tested and brought into production, from defining test strategies to building robust test systems and supporting a smooth production launch. You will work primarily on the production floor, moving from concept to execution as you design, build, troubleshoot, and improve real test systems that validate product performance and integrate seamlessly into high-volume manufacturing lines. The role is ideal for a practical engineer who can connect product design, test requirements, and manufacturing flow to deliver stable, efficient, and repeatable production processes.
Responsibilities
- Define test requirements based on product design, risk, and performance expectations.
- Develop comprehensive test strategies at module, drive, and system levels to ensure complete and efficient test coverage.
- Prepare new products for test readiness prior to production launch, ensuring test plans and systems are in place.
- Design and build production test systems, test stands, fixtures, and interfaces that are robust and easy to operate.
- Develop reliable test methods for production use and refine them for stability, repeatability, and throughput.
- Support and enhance automated test platforms, including integration of automated test equipment into production lines.
- Support the design and build of production lines for new products, including defining build sequence, station layout, and test integration points.
- Ensure close alignment between test systems and overall manufacturing flow to enable repeatable, efficient production processes.
- Drive First Pass Yield (FPY) to 97% or higher by improving test methods and addressing systemic issues.
- Lead root cause analysis for test failures and reduce repeat failures through corrective and preventive actions.
- Ensure test methods accurately validate true product performance rather than masking underlying issues.
- Ensure test operations do not constrain production by optimizing test coverage, cycle time, and equipment utilization.
- Improve test cycle times while maintaining or improving coverage and data quality.
- Support consistent test execution across shifts by providing clear procedures, training, and robust system design.
- Understand product and test requirements and translate them into practical test solutions and hardware.
- Define how products should be tested and why failures occur, using data-driven analysis to inform decisions.
- Troubleshoot failed tests and analyze failure data to identify root causes and drive design or process improvements.
- Integrate test stations and test stands into production lines in a way that supports flow, ergonomics, and throughput.
- Analyze product designs, determine appropriate test strategies, and evaluate failure data to refine both design and test processes.
- Collaborate closely with engineering and project teams to support new product introduction (NPI) and product launches.
- Continuously improve test systems so they are stable, reliable, and easy for production teams to operate.
- Monitor and report on test performance metrics, including FPY and failure trends, and implement improvements based on findings.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Controls, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 5 years of experience in test engineering, controls, or electronics manufacturing.
- Proven experience designing and building production test systems or fixtures, not just writing test plans.
- Hands-on test engineering experience with significant experience building and operating test systems.
- Strong electrical troubleshooting capability and the ability to diagnose complex test and product issues.
- Experience supporting or leading new product introduction (NPI) or product launch into production.
- Ability to connect product design, test strategy, and manufacturing processes into a coherent production solution.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills applied to both hardware and test process issues.
- Comfort working primarily on the production floor in a hands-on, practical environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in electronics, drives, or control systems.
- Experience with automated test systems such as SPEA, LabVIEW, or PLC-based platforms.
- Familiarity with test systems, automated test equipment, and test equipment commonly used in electronics and power electronics.
- Experience with power electronics or control systems in a production environment.
- Experience integrating test stations into high-volume production lines.
- Ability to analyze designs, determine test strategies, and evaluate failure data to improve both product and process.
- Experience with new product and technology development, including creating test methods and test stands and validating designs.
- Strong communication skills to work closely with engineering and project teams and to support consistent execution across shifts.
Work Environment
This role is heavily floor-oriented, with at least 60% of your time spent on the production floor in a hands-on capacity. You will frequently build, operate, and refine test stands, fixtures, and test systems rather than focusing on desk-based design work. The environment centers on high-volume production lines, where you integrate test stations into the manufacturing flow and work directly with real hardware, electronics, and power electronics. You will collaborate closely with engineering and project teams to support new product introductions and ongoing production, operating in a fast-paced setting that emphasizes stability, repeatability, throughput, and achieving high First Pass Yield. The work involves regular interaction with automated test systems, test equipment, and PLC or LabVIEW-based platforms, with a strong focus on practical problem-solving on the line.
