Job Title: Technical Writer


Job Description

The core purpose of the Technical Writer is to prepare, review, revise, and professionally format technical documents, including systems engineering, system operations, testing, and user documentation for various automation projects. This role requires a technical background and the ability to create documentation templates that enhance efficiency from project to project. The Technical Writer collaborates on all phases of documentation under the general direction of Project Managers or direct managers.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize the appropriate Document Management System (DMS) and ensure defined standards are consistently applied by the project team.
  • Drive empowerment within role authorization to manage work according to organizational standards.
  • Prioritize and manage documentation requirements across multiple projects.
  • Accountable for overall technical documentation results.
  • Perform contract reading and derive actions for documentation obligations.
  • Document and report all work results according to defined standards.
  • Manage customer documentation requirements and assist the team in resolving issues.
  • Clarify customer targets and requirements per contract specifications.
  • Participate in lessons learned activities and communicate results to project and relevant parties.
  • Proactively notify internal customers, management, and/or team of changes.
  • Coordinate and communicate effectively with subject experts in engineering and field operations to meet deadlines.
  • Collaborate actively with engineering and field operations.
  • Handle additional coordination responsibilities as needed.

Essential Skills

  • Ability to read and understand documentation requirements specified in contracts and create documents timely, meeting or exceeding milestone dates.
  • Ability to develop processes for gaining and understanding information required for project documents from specifications, reviewing drawings, and technical conversations with engineers.
  • Capability to meet or beat budgeted hours for each deliverable and report percent complete in an earned vs. burned format.
  • Ability to travel to customer facilities as needed and work non-business hours based on project delivery commitments.
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and capable of performing reliable, accurate work that is thoroughly self-verified.
  • Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures related to technical writing.
  • Proficiency in Adobe or similar software.
  • Strategic thinker and problem-solver.
  • Strong analytical skills and eagerness to learn.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) with strong attention to detail.
  • Collaborative and influential.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with 10 years of technical writing experience.
  • Experience in developing and writing technical manuals and documents.
  • Setting up and working within a document management system.
  • Experience with engineering, document control, work instruction, Adobe, Microsoft Word, and SharePoint.
  • Potential to run the department in the future, currently consisting of one full-time and one part-time consultant.
  • Ability to help build out department standards and processes.
  • Experience working for government integrators, UPS, etc., with an understanding of systems and engineering work.

Work Environment

Office environment with minimal travel at times to see jobs, ask questions, and continue to develop knowledge and skills.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $41.00 - $53.00/hr.
