Job Description
This full-time Systems Safety Engineer role focuses on leading the aircraft system safety assessment process for supplemental type certificate (STC) installations at locations in New Century, KS or Wichita, KS. You will develop and execute comprehensive system safety analyses, ensure designs meet FAA regulatory requirements, and collaborate closely with cross-functional engineering teams to demonstrate compliance. The position offers the opportunity to guide safety approaches, approve critical documentation, and mentor junior engineers in a modern, state-of-the-art facility.
Responsibilities
- Lead the aircraft system safety assessment process in support of STC installations, ensuring all safety requirements are clearly defined and met.
- Work with system safety analysts to establish the system safety approach and develop documentation necessary to show regulatory compliance.
- Generate Functional Hazard Analyses, qualitative analyses, Failure Modes and Effects Analyses (FMEA), Fault Tree Analyses, and particular risk/common cause analyses required for STC certification.
- Conduct detailed qualitative safety analyses to evaluate system behavior, identify hazards, and propose appropriate mitigations.
- Develop and maintain FMEAs to systematically identify potential failure modes and assess their effects on aircraft systems and operations.
- Perform Fault Tree Analyses to determine root causes and probability of system-level failures, supporting certification and safety objectives.
- Perform particular risk and common cause analyses to identify and mitigate risks arising from shared components, environments, or operational conditions.
- Interface with Hardware, Software, and Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) groups to ensure appropriate design assurance levels are considered and applied.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to ensure avionics, electrical, and mechanical designs align with system safety requirements and certification standards.
- Review and approve test plans, test reports, and other data that support the system safety assessment process.
- Work with engineers to generate and approve compliance statements for FAA regulation 23.1309 and other regulations requiring system safety substantiation.
- Ensure all safety-related documentation meets FAA certification expectations, including aircraft manuals, drawings, and supporting data.
- Apply a strong understanding of FAA regulations to design systems for compliance and certification readiness.
- Leverage knowledge of commercial avionics interface standards to guide proper installation and integration.
- Provide guidance and mentoring to Aircraft Systems Engineer 1, supporting their development in system safety and certification practices.
- Effectively prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a flexible, fast-paced environment while maintaining high attention to detail.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with internal stakeholders, providing concise explanations of safety analyses, findings, and recommendations.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace, or Computer Engineering AND a minimum of 1 year of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Excellent academic performance, generally reflected by a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- Detailed working knowledge of aircraft manuals and drawings, including the content required for FAA certification.
- Strong understanding of FAA regulations and the ability to design systems for regulatory compliance.
- Demonstrated solid understanding of commercial avionics interface standards and their installation.
- Proficiency with job-specific software tools, including Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and FaultTree .
- Advanced understanding of avionics systems, electrical and mechanical design, installation, and certification processes.
- Demonstrated advanced knowledge in one or more of the following technical areas: Electrical Systems, Structures, Mechanical Systems, System Safety, HIRF/Lightning, or Aircraft Certification.
- Ability to be detail-oriented, work proactively, and perform effectively with supervision and coaching.
- Capability to prioritize and multi-task in a flexible, fast-paced, and challenging environment.
- Strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience performing Functional Hazard Analyses, FMEA, Fault Tree Analyses, and particular risk/common cause analyses for aircraft systems.
- Familiarity with STC certification processes and documentation requirements.
- Experience working closely with hardware, software, and EMC teams to align design assurance levels with safety objectives.
- Experience in system safety assessment for avionics and aircraft electrical/mechanical systems.
- Interest in mentoring and supporting junior engineers in system safety and certification topics.
- Ability to synthesize complex technical data into clear compliance statements and reports for regulatory purposes.
- Comfort working within one of the largest employer environments in the Kansas City area, contributing to large-scale aerospace projects.
Work Environment
You will work in a new, state-of-the-art facility that supports advanced aerospace engineering and certification activities. The standard schedule is an on-site, office-based role from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., providing a structured workday with opportunities for collaboration across engineering disciplines. Approximately 15–20% of your time will involve working at the New Century, KS airport, where you will engage directly with aircraft, installations, and test activities in an operational environment. The setting combines modern office resources with hands-on exposure to aircraft systems, offering a dynamic mix of analytical and field-based work.
