Job Description
The SUE Technician / Analyst marks and documents underground utilities to support survey and design projects. This role focuses on designating and locating subsurface utilities using electromagnetic equipment, ground penetrating radar (GPR), and vacuum excavation test holes, while working closely with a SUE Coordinator in a fully field-based environment.
Responsibilities
- Assist the assigned SUE Coordinator with the daily operations of designating and locating subsurface utilities.
- Operate electromagnetic designating equipment and handheld locating devices to identify underground utilities for survey and design purposes.
- Use ground penetrating radar (GPR) to locate a variety of underground utilities in different field conditions.
- Operate, or learn to operate, air/vacuum excavation equipment to dig test holes and confirm the location and depth of utilities.
- Load and unload tools, equipment, and materials required for daily field operations.
- Place, maintain, and remove traffic control signs and devices to support safe work zones in the field.
- Assist in the removal and replacement of utility manhole covers to access underground infrastructure.
- Prepare clear and accurate field sketches and measurements of designated utility lines for use in documentation and design.
- Interpret and work from utility maps, plans, and records to support accurate utility locating activities.
- Document field findings accurately and contribute to data analysis and reporting.
- Communicate effectively with the SUE Coordinator and team members to coordinate tasks and ensure safe and efficient operations.
- Work collaboratively within a field team, supporting others as needed to complete daily assignments.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) or subsurface utility locating.
- Hands-on experience with ground penetrating radar (GPR) for locating underground utilities.
- Experience using land surveying equipment in a field environment.
- Ability to travel frequently, including overnight stays, to support field assignments.
- Strong communication skills to coordinate activities and report findings clearly.
- Ability to produce accurate documentation and perform basic data analysis related to utility locations.
- Proven ability to work effectively within a team in field conditions.
- Capability and willingness to perform physically active field work, including lifting equipment and working outdoors.
- Experience in land surveying or working as a surveyor is highly beneficial.
- Familiarity with Subsurface Utility Engineering (S.U.E.) practices and standards.
- Experience as a subsurface utility locating technician or utility locator.
- Surveying and CAD experience is a plus for documenting and interpreting utility information.
- Comfort using utility maps, plans, and records in conjunction with field locating equipment.
This position is 100% field-based and involves working outdoors in a variety of weather and site conditions. The role requires frequent travel, which may include overnight stays, to reach project locations. Daily work centers on the use of field technologies such as electromagnetic locating equipment, handheld utility locators, ground penetrating radar (GPR), land surveying instruments, and air/vacuum excavation equipment. The work environment includes active job sites and roadways where traffic control signs and devices are used to maintain safe work zones. The position involves physical activity such as lifting equipment, removing and replacing manhole covers, and operating field tools throughout the workday.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Raleigh, NC.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $15.00 - $20.00/hr.
