What are the responsibilities and job description for the Substation Wireman position at Actalent?
Job Title: Substation Protection & Controls Wireman
Job Description
This role focuses on installing, wiring, and supporting protection and control systems within utility substations across Colorado and the Texas/Oklahoma panhandle and southeastern New Mexico regions. The Substation Protection & Controls Wireman works in both greenfield and brownfield substations at various stages of energization, performing precise control wiring, panel wiring, and point-to-point wiring on low-voltage conductors. This position offers a clear pathway to more technical and higher-paying roles such as pre-commissioning agent or commissioning agent.
Responsibilities
- Install and wire protection and control systems in utility substations, including both greenfield and brownfield sites.
- Perform point-to-point control wiring on substation equipment, relay panels, and control panels using #10 AWG and smaller conductors.
- Read, interpret, and follow schematics and wiring diagrams independently to complete wiring and installation tasks accurately.
- Support protection and controls installation work, including panel wiring, low-voltage wiring, and electrical assembly activities.
- Work safely and effectively in energized and non-energized substation environments, following all site procedures and safety practices.
- Travel to and work at various project sites, primarily throughout Colorado and within the Texas/Oklahoma panhandle and southeastern New Mexico service areas.
- Remain on-site for extended periods, typically several months at a single location, to support ongoing substation projects.
- Stand for long periods and work in awkward positions as needed to complete wiring and installation tasks in the field.
- Collaborate with field teams, technicians, and commissioning personnel to ensure protection and control systems are installed correctly and ready for testing and commissioning.
- Document work performed as required by project standards and communicate progress or issues to project leadership.
Essential Skills
- Hands-on control wiring experience specifically in substation protection and controls (not general electrical or residential).
- Proven ability to read and interpret schematics and wiring diagrams independently.
- Experience wiring #10 AWG and smaller conductors in control and low-voltage applications.
- Demonstrated experience with control wiring in environments such as HVAC controls, panel shop wiring, fire alarm wiring, PLC wiring, or solar and wind control wiring.
- Comfort working in greenfield and brownfield substation environments at various stages of energization.
- Ability to work long on-site days (typically 10-hour shifts), including standing for extended periods and working in awkward positions.
- Willingness and ability to be on-site five days per week, often at the same location for several months.
- Background or familiarity with substation, electrical, electrical engineering, utility distribution, and substation design concepts.
- Residence or ability to regularly work within Colorado and/or the Texas/Oklahoma panhandle and southeastern New Mexico regions.
- Control wiring experience in substation protection and controls over multiple years (as implied by the requirement for significant hands-on experience).
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in HVAC controls wiring, providing a strong foundation in low-voltage control circuits.
- Panel shop wiring experience, including building and wiring control panels in a shop or field environment.
- Fire alarm wiring experience, especially with low-voltage, point-to-point control wiring.
- PLC wiring experience, including wiring input/output devices and control circuits.
- Experience with solar and wind control wiring, particularly in utility or industrial environments.
- Residence in the Texas/Oklahoma panhandle or southeastern New Mexico is preferred.
- Willingness to relocate or travel regularly within the defined service areas; relocation support may be considered for highly qualified candidates.
- Eligibility for potential sign-on incentives may be considered for candidates who meet or exceed all core requirements.
- Motivation to advance into more technical roles such as pre-commissioning agent or commissioning agent.
Work Environment
The Substation Protection & Controls Wireman works primarily in field-based environments within utility substations. Assignments include both greenfield and brownfield substations at various stages of energization, requiring consistent adherence to safety procedures and comfort working around high-voltage equipment. Typical schedules are structured as five days per week with 10-hour days, and projects often last several months at a single site. Work is performed mostly outdoors or in substation control buildings, involving prolonged standing, working in awkward positions, and handling low-voltage control conductors such as #10 AWG and smaller. The role uses tools and practices common to substation, electrical, and utility distribution environments, and offers a clear progression path into more technical and higher-paying positions such as pre-commissioning and commissioning roles.
