What are the responsibilities and job description for the Remote - Transmission Line Engineer position at Actalent?
Job Description
The Transmission Line Engineer will support high‑voltage transmission line projects, typically ranging from 69 kV to 500 kV, from conceptual design through construction support. This role combines detailed engineering, cross‑discipline coordination, and technical leadership to deliver safe, reliable, and efficient transmission infrastructure. Candidates with a civil or mechanical engineering background are preferred, though electrical engineers with relevant experience may be considered. Experience with California utilities and strong knowledge of California General Orders governing overhead electric lines and communication facilities are highly desirable.
Responsibilities
- Prepare comprehensive engineering calculations, technical specifications, drawings, and scope documents for complete construction packages.
- Lead and coordinate design engineers and technical staff to deliver high‑quality transmission line projects on schedule and within defined scope.
- Review and validate technical reports, engineering studies, and design documents to ensure accuracy, compliance, and constructability.
- Coordinate closely with contractors, permitting agencies, and internal disciplines to support project approvals and execution.
- Provide construction and field support, including resolving design issues, clarifying engineering intent, and addressing site conditions as needed.
- Apply sound project management practices to maintain high standards of engineering quality, safety, and execution throughout the project lifecycle.
- Contribute engineering expertise across multiple power delivery projects, including lines, poles, and towers, supporting both new builds and modifications.
- Develop and refine transmission line models, route alignments, plan and profile drawings, and structural analyses using specialized design software.
- Interpret and incorporate survey, GIS, and geotechnical data into transmission line designs and foundation solutions.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable safety standards, codes, and regulations related to overhead electric lines and communication facilities.
- Communicate complex engineering concepts clearly to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders, supporting informed decision‑making.
- Actively participate in a collaborative, high‑caliber engineering culture and contribute to continuous improvement of design standards and processes.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in transmission line engineering or closely related power delivery design work.
- Strong background in civil, structural, or mechanical engineering; relevant experience in transmission structures such as poles and towers.
- Proficiency in transmission line design using the PLS software suite, including PLS‑CADD, PLS‑Pole, and PLS‑Tower.
- Demonstrated ability to model transmission lines, develop route alignments, and produce plan and profile drawings and structural analyses.
- Strong knowledge of conductors, hardware assemblies, structure detailing, and preparation of bills of material.
- Experience developing assembly, framing, loading, and design drawings for wood, concrete, steel, FRP, and lattice structures, with lattice tower experience preferred.
- Familiarity with related electrical studies such as EMF, grounding, fault current, contaminants, and clearance analysis.
- Experience interpreting geotechnical data for foundation design and embedment calculations.
- Ability to work effectively with survey and GIS data and integrate it into PLS‑CADD models.
- Proficiency with L‑Pile, MFAD, and Microsoft Office applications.
- Familiarity with industry standards and codes including ASCE, ACI, IEEE, NESC, RUS, and GO‑95 or similar safety standards for overhead lines.
- Self‑motivated with strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Proven ability to work effectively in team environments, manage workloads, and support stakeholder expectations.
- Strong technical communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain complex engineering solutions to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Civil or mechanical engineering degree or equivalent technical background in structural or transmission engineering.
- Experience working with major California utilities or on transmission projects in California.
- Exposure to complex, large‑scale infrastructure projects across multiple markets or regions.
- Interest in developing long‑term technical expertise or progressing into project leadership roles within power delivery.
- Ability to thrive in a collaborative, high‑performance engineering culture and contribute to knowledge sharing and mentoring.
The role operates within a high‑caliber, collaborative engineering environment where teams work closely together at the project level. Engineers engage in technically meaningful work on complex, large‑scale infrastructure projects, gaining exposure to a variety of markets rather than repetitive or siloed assignments. The organization emphasizes career longevity, offering multiple paths for growth in technical, project leadership, or cross‑disciplinary directions. Employees describe a culture of flexibility and trust, with work‑life balance improving as professionals gain experience and influence over how projects are executed. The environment supports autonomy, professional development, and recognition, with the stability and resources of a global firm behind the project work.
