The Project Engineer will lead technology and integration projects for fulfillment and distribution center operations, ensuring that complex automation and material-handling solutions are delivered on time, within scope, and in line with project goals. This role collaborates closely with external equipment vendors, customers, and partners, and relies on a strong understanding of design approaches and industry technologies used in automated industrial environments.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage technology and integration projects from initiation through commissioning, ensuring successful delivery of automation solutions that meet defined project goals.
  • Coordinate and oversee the design, installation, and commissioning of engineering equipment and material-handling systems in fulfillment and distribution centers.
  • Work directly with external equipment vendors, customers, and partners to define requirements, align on technical solutions, and resolve issues throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Apply solid knowledge of fulfillment and distribution center design approaches and industry technologies to develop effective, scalable automation solutions.
  • Manage project engineering activities, including planning, scheduling, and tracking progress to ensure milestones and deadlines are met.
  • Oversee construction management aspects related to equipment installation and integration, ensuring that work follows design specifications and safety standards.
  • Provide technical leadership on large-scale industrial engineering projects, guiding cross-functional teams and stakeholders through design and implementation phases.
  • Develop and review integrated automation layouts using CAD tools, ensuring that designs are accurate, efficient, and feasible for installation.
  • Manage and be accountable for cumulative automation project budgets ranging from 0.5 million to 50 million, ensuring cost control and financial transparency.
  • Support throughput qualification (TQ) or similar performance qualification efforts to validate that systems achieve required throughput and performance targets.
  • Use Microsoft Excel, Project, and Outlook to manage schedules, track deliverables, report status, and communicate with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Travel frequently to installation sites to oversee on-site activities, support equipment installation and commissioning, and address technical and operational issues.
  • Document project plans, design changes, and implementation details to support knowledge transfer, maintenance, and continuous improvement.
Essential Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Operations, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • 4 years of experience as a project engineer, process engineer, project manager, manufacturing engineer, or in a closely related role.
  • Proven experience directly managing and being responsible for cumulative automation project budgets from 0.5 million to 50 million.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership on large-scale industrial engineering projects.
  • Hands-on design and/or implementation experience with integrated automation solutions, including complex material handling systems, high-speed packaging lines, and manufacturing lines.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to plan, execute, and deliver complex engineering projects.
  • Experience with vendor management, including coordination with external equipment vendors and partners.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, including Excel, Project, and Outlook.
  • High proficiency in CAD tools, with the ability to independently develop integrated automation layouts.
  • Ability to travel extensively, up to 75–90% of the time, to installation sites across North America and the United States.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience with throughput qualification (TQ) or similar performance and throughput validation in automated systems.
  • Background in engineering equipment installation and commissioning in industrial or distribution environments.
  • Experience in construction management related to automation and material-handling equipment installation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to address technical challenges in complex automation projects.
  • Effective communication skills for working with customers, vendors, and cross-functional project teams.
  • Ability to work independently in the field while maintaining alignment with broader project objectives and timelines.
Work Environment

This role is highly travel-focused, with the ability and willingness to be on the road up to 75–90% of the time. Most team members typically fly to an installation site on Monday morning, work on-site throughout the week, and return home on Friday afternoon. In some cases, individuals may choose to stay over a weekend, though this is rare. Work takes place primarily at fulfillment and distribution center installation sites across North America and the United States, where complex automation, material-handling equipment, and integrated industrial systems are being installed and commissioned. The environment is dynamic and hands-on, involving close collaboration with vendors, contractors, and on-site operations teams, and requires comfort working in active industrial and construction settings.
