Job Description
The Product Safety Engineer is responsible for planning, developing, executing, and automating test strategies to verify and validate electronic hardware designs, with a strong focus on product safety and regulatory compliance. This role works closely with hardware design, firmware, manufacturing, and quality teams to ensure electronic products, including medical devices, meet functional, performance, reliability, and safety requirements throughout the entire product lifecycle, from prototype through production release.
Responsibilities
- Develop and execute comprehensive test plans for electronic hardware, including PCB assemblies, subsystems, and complete products, with particular emphasis on product safety and regulatory requirements.
- Design, build, and maintain hardware test setups, fixtures, and test equipment to support product safety and performance testing.
- Perform functional, electrical, performance, stress, and environmental testing on electronic hardware and troubleshoot hardware failures at the component, board, and system levels.
- Collaborate closely with hardware design engineers to review schematics, PCB layouts, and design changes from a testability, reliability, and safety perspective.
- Develop automated test scripts and tools to improve test coverage, repeatability, and efficiency in product safety and hardware validation testing.
- Document test procedures, test results, failure analyses, and corrective actions in a clear and traceable manner.
- Support design verification (DVT), production validation (PVT), and manufacturing bring-up activities to ensure safe and reliable product introduction into production.
- Assist with regulatory, safety, and compliance testing, including EMC/EMI, ESD, thermal, and other safety-related evaluations in line with IEC standards.
- Provide feedback and recommendations to improve design robustness, manufacturability, testability, and overall product safety.
- Work with cross-functional teams, including firmware, manufacturing, and quality, to resolve issues identified during testing and to drive continuous improvement in product safety and reliability.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
- 3 years of experience testing electronic hardware, with experience level adjustable based on overall qualifications.
- Experience in product testing and product safety, ideally including work on medical devices.
- Knowledge and practical experience with IEC -1 standards or similar safety standards for electronic products.
- Strong understanding of analog and digital circuits, power systems, and embedded hardware.
- Proficiency with common lab equipment, including oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, power supplies, signal generators, and digital multimeters (DMMs).
- Ability to read and interpret schematics, PCB layouts, and component datasheets.
- Hands-on experience with hardware debugging and root-cause analysis at the component, board, and system levels.
- Strong technical documentation skills, including the ability to write clear test procedures and reports.
- Effective communication skills for collaborating with hardware, firmware, manufacturing, and quality teams.
- Experience with test automation using Python, Shell or command-line scripting, or similar tools.
- Familiarity with embedded systems, firmware interaction, and communication protocols such as I²C, SPI, UART, USB, and Ethernet.
- Experience with manufacturing test development and production support for electronic hardware.
- Knowledge of reliability testing, environmental testing, and failure analysis methods, including FMEA.
- Background in product safety for medical devices or other regulated electronic products.
The Product Safety Engineer works in a laboratory and engineering environment that focuses on testing and validating electronic hardware. The role involves extensive hands-on work with test benches, PCB assemblies, subsystems, and complete products using equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, power supplies, signal generators, and digital multimeters. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including hardware design, firmware, manufacturing, and quality, throughout the product lifecycle from prototype to production. The environment emphasizes rigorous testing for safety, reliability, and compliance, including EMC/EMI, ESD, thermal, and other regulatory evaluations. Work typically follows standard engineering office and lab hours, with periods of focused testing and troubleshooting during design verification, production validation, and manufacturing bring-up phases. Attire is generally appropriate for a professional engineering and laboratory setting, including adherence to any applicable lab safety requirements.

This is a Contract position based out of Portage, MI.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $50.00 - $55.00/hr.
