What are the responsibilities and job description for the Product Engineer position at Actalent?
Job Title: Product Engineer (Electromechanical / Mechatronics)
Job Overview
We are seeking a hands-on Product Engineer with a strong background in electromechanical systems to support the design, development, integration, and deployment of physical products used in behavioral science research. This role is ideal for an engineer who understands how complete hardware systems come together and enjoys working across mechanical, electrical, and system-level boundaries.
Rather than focusing on a single discipline, this role emphasizes end-to-end hardware ownership. You will work on products that combine mechanical assemblies, motors, sensors, wiring, and control elements, ensuring all components function together reliably and are ready for real-world use. While the role has a strong mechanical foundation, success depends on comfort working with electrical systems and collaborating around controls and embedded software.
This position offers high autonomy, visibility, and ownership in a small, fast-moving environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the design and development of electromechanical products from concept through deployment
- Design mechanical components and assemblies including structures, mechanisms, and housings
- Integrate mechanical designs with motors, sensors, wiring, and power systems
- Build, assemble, test, and troubleshoot electromechanical devices at the system level
- Support system integration activities ensuring mechanical, electrical, and control elements function cohesively
- Create and maintain CAD models, assemblies, and 2D drawings
- Design for manufacturability, assembly, serviceability, and long-term reliability
- Participate in troubleshooting and root cause analysis for field or customer-reported issues
- Collaborate with electrical, controls, and software contributors to resolve cross-disciplinary issues
- Communicate directly with customers to support installations and resolve complex technical challenges
- Travel internationally several times per year to install equipment, train users, and provide advanced on-site support
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a closely related field
- 5 or more years of experience working on electromechanical or integrated hardware products
- Strong mechanical engineering foundation with hands-on build and troubleshooting experience
- Demonstrated experience working with motors, sensors, wiring, and electromechanical assemblies
- Experience owning products or subsystems through multiple phases of development
- Strong system-level problem-solving skills and ability to manage competing priorities
- Proficiency in SolidWorks and experience generating manufacturing-ready documentation
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-ownership environment
- Clear communicator able to work cross-functionally and with customers
Preferred / Additional Qualifications
- background in mechatronics, robotics, automation, lab instrumentation, or test systems
- Exposure to control systems or embedded software at an interface level
- Experience supporting manufacturing, NPI, or sustaining engineering activities
- Customer-facing experience including field installation or advanced technical support
- Experience in small teams or startup-style engineering environments
Work Environment and What Makes This Role Different
- Hands-on, hardware-focused role with direct ownership of products and outcomes
- Broad technical exposure across mechanical, electrical, and system integration domains
- Small-company environment with minimal bureaucracy and real decision-making authority
- High visibility impact on both product design and customer success
- Primarily onsite, with some flexibility for early meetings with international partners
- Regular collaboration with European customers and international travel opportunities
