Job Description

The primary role of the Phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations within the laboratory environment.

Responsibilities

• Perform blood draws, label specimens, and centrifuge specimens.
• Record maintenance data and conduct decontamination procedures.
• Update patient information as necessary.
• Collect and store specimens following established procedures.
• Explain the venipuncture process and other specimen collections clearly and courteously.
• Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
• Comprehend and follow all physicians' orders.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens according to test orders.
• Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure accuracy.
• Package specimens for transport and store samples at required temperatures.
• Place samples in appropriate collection containers or tubes and accurately label them.
• Follow specific procedures to maintain the integrity of specimens during transport.
• Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
• Attend annual department trainings.
• Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

Essential Skills

• Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment.
• Minimum of 6 months' experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• At least 1-2 years of phlebotomy experience.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Proficiency in blood draw and specimen collection techniques.

Work Environment

The work environment is a fast-paced lab, clinic, or hospital setting where you will engage with patients and medical professionals. The position may require handling various technologies and equipment, following strict protocols to ensure specimen integrity and compliance with health regulations. The shift for the position is Mon - Fri, 8am - 5pm.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Virginia Beach, VA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr.
