Job Description
This Phlebotomist II role focuses on performing high-quality specimen collection while supporting daily laboratory operations in a fast-paced environment. You will carry out venipunctures and other specimen collections, ensure accurate labeling and handling of samples, assist with troubleshooting and training, and recommend workflow improvements to maintain efficiency and patient safety.
Responsibilities
- Perform venipunctures and other blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a safe, efficient, and professional manner.
- Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and protocols.
- Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure accurate identification and traceability.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and laboratory protocols.
- Verify all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure complete accuracy.
- Package specimens securely for transport and follow all procedures required to maintain specimen integrity during transit.
- Store specimen samples at the required temperatures and place them in the appropriate collection containers or tubes with accurate labeling.
- Follow different procedures and protocols as necessary for various specimen types to preserve quality and integrity.
- Record maintenance data accurately and perform decontamination tasks as needed to support laboratory operations.
- Update patient information in the system to ensure accurate and current records.
- Fully understand and interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct tests and procedures are performed.
- Answer telephone calls and provide laboratory results or information in response to inquiries, following established guidelines.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and regulatory requirements.
- Attend annual department trainings and other required educational sessions to maintain knowledge and compliance.
- Assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, processing, and workflow, and recommend improvements where appropriate.
- Support training of colleagues or new staff in phlebotomy techniques and laboratory procedures as needed.
Essential Skills
- Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
- Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
- High school diploma or GED.
- 0–2 years of overall experience in a related healthcare or laboratory role.
- Demonstrated proficiency in performing blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Experience with labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and storing specimens according to test requirements.
- Ability to accurately match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify test requisitions or computer labels.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.
- Strong understanding of OSHA and DEP regulations and commitment to compliance.
- Ability to clearly and courteously explain specimen collection procedures to patients.
- Attention to detail and accuracy in specimen handling, labeling, and documentation.

The environment requires strict adherence to safety protocols and regulatory standards, including OSHA and DEP regulations, to ensure a clean, safe, and compliant workplace. You will use computers and Microsoft Office Suite to update patient information, verify test orders, and document maintenance and laboratory activities. Regular departmental trainings support continuous learning and regulatory compliance. The position involves standing for extended periods, following established dress and safety guidelines appropriate for clinical and laboratory settings, and maintaining a professional, courteous demeanor with patients and colleagues.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr.
