Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled scientist responsible for enhancing current strain improvement activities and executing process support and improvement projects for manufacturing processes. Utilizing expertise in microbiology, molecular genetics, analytics, and fermentation development, this role will focus on developing improved microbial strains and fermentation processes.
Responsibilities
- Improve industrial Streptomyces strains and deepen the understanding of fermentation of various Streptomyces species.
- Identify process improvement opportunities through data collection, mining, observation, and technical report writing in collaboration with scientists and technicians.
- Develop small-scale fermentation models to support large-scale industrial natural product fermentation.
- Support high throughput fermentation screening, including planning, designing, coordinating, and screening cultures to identify improved strains.
- Analyze data and control charting at the end of each run to identify process shifts and perform root cause investigation of Beta runs.
- Utilize scientific and statistical analysis tools to enhance process understanding and identify improvement opportunities.
- Develop and execute projects to address process performance issues and deliver improvement opportunities.
- Aseptically handle various bacteria.
- Ensure all experiments are well-designed and documented with clear objectives in electronic notebooks and batch records.
- Write and present technical summaries in reports and at departmental technical meetings and reviews.
- Ensure alignment with all relevant development quality, regulatory, HSE, and GLP requirements.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor's degree in microbiology, biochemistry, biotechnology, chemical engineering, or a related field.
- 2 years of industrial experience or relevant laboratory experience, including analytical, molecular biology, and genetics.
- Technical proficiency with microbes, molecular biology, aseptic techniques (including Streptomyces), basic statistics, and Microsoft Office.
- Familiarity with environmental and safety compliance, lab PPE, and safe laboratory practices.
- Effective oral and written communication skills, self-management abilities, and capability to multitask and prioritize activities.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team, promoting safe behaviors.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Ability to troubleshoot and operate automated liquid handling equipment.
- Experience with bioreactors for small-scale fermentation modeling and high throughput screening.
- Experience in tech transfer, scale-up, and validation of biopharmaceutical processes.
- Previous statistical experience, including experimental data analysis and interpretation, and familiarity with JMP.
- Scientific curiosity and creativity in adapting and modifying existing techniques for novel uses.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Indianapolis, IN.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $25.00 - $35.00/hr.
