What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanical Designer position at Actalent?
Job Description
This Mechanical Designer role focuses on supporting the design and detailing of prefabricated skid systems and piping for industrial projects in sectors such as power, water, and data centers. You will transform engineering concepts into fabrication-ready 3D models and drawings, ensuring accuracy, constructability, and alignment with project specifications. This position offers the opportunity to take ownership of your work and act as a lead contributor in a collaborative engineering and manufacturing environment.
Responsibilities
- Convert P&IDs and schematics into detailed 3D models and fabrication drawings for prefabricated skid systems and piping.
- Produce fabrication deliverables including isometric drawings, spool sheets, cut lists, and bills of materials (BOMs).
- Design skid layouts that integrate structural frames, OEM equipment, and piping systems to meet project and constructability requirements.
- Coordinate closely with vendors, engineers, and field teams to clarify requirements, resolve design issues, and support smooth project execution.
- Review project specifications, drawings, and submittals to verify accuracy, compliance with standards, and constructability.
- Maintain and update 3D models and drawings throughout the project lifecycle to reflect design changes and field feedback.
- Apply knowledge of piping systems, including carbon steel, stainless steel, and flanged or grooved connections, to develop practical designs.
- Incorporate ASME standards and best practices into mechanical and piping designs to support quality and safety.
- Support manufacturing and fabrication workflows by providing clear, accurate, and complete design documentation.
- Collaborate with the fabrication shop and field personnel to address design questions and improve future design practices.
- 3 years of piping design or detailing experience, preferably in a manufacturing environment.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD Plant 3D for creating 3D piping models and fabrication drawings.
- Experience with piping design and layout, including carbon steel and stainless steel systems with flanged and grooved connections.
- Understanding of P&IDs, fabrication workflows, and installation constraints for industrial piping and skid systems.
- Ability to produce isometrics, spool sheets, cut lists, and bills of materials for fabrication.
- Working knowledge of ASME standards as they apply to mechanical and piping design.
- Mechanical design and drafting experience using CAD tools, including 2D and 3D workflows.
- Experience with piping layout and sheet metal design in an industrial or manufacturing context.
- Strong attention to detail, ensuring accuracy and completeness in models, drawings, and documentation.
- Effective communication skills to collaborate with engineers, vendors, and field teams.
- Mechanical engineering degree is a plus.
- Experience with 150 class piping systems is a plus.
- Industrial project experience in sectors such as power, water, data centers, or similar environments.
- Exposure to Navisworks or BIM coordination tools for model review and clash detection.
- Fabrication shop or field experience supporting installation or construction activities.
- Experience using SolidWorks for mechanical design and modeling.
- Background in the HVAC industry, particularly with piping and mechanical systems.
- Ability to take ownership of projects and serve as a lead designer on assigned work.
- Mechanical engineering degree or related technical education is preferred but not required.
You will work in a manufacturing facility of approximately 25 people, providing a close-knit and collaborative environment where engineering and fabrication teams interact regularly. The role includes a dedicated office space, allowing you to focus on design work while remaining closely connected to the shop floor and production activities. You will use tools such as AutoCAD Plant 3D, CAD platforms, and potentially SolidWorks and Navisworks/BIM for design and coordination. The environment emphasizes practical, fabrication-ready design, with direct feedback from manufacturing and field teams to refine and improve your work.
