Job Description
The Lab Technician tests production batches using defined methods, analyzes in-spec and out-of-spec data, and ensures that all products meet or exceed customer quality requirements. This role interprets test results and historical data, provides clear adjustment instructions to production personnel, and supports the efficient, safe, and organized operation of the laboratory. The technician works with minimal supervision, follows standard technical procedures, and contributes to continuous improvement of quality processes and documentation.
Responsibilities
- Test production batches according to specific written testing methods and document all results accurately.
- Interpret test results and historical data to confirm that products meet customer and internal quality specifications.
- Approve batches only after verifying that all required tests are complete and results meet all specifications before moving to the next production process.
- Enter batch data into the electronic batch records system in a timely and accurate manner.
- Generate all required paperwork and documentation in accordance with customer specifications and internal procedures.
- Gather, prepare, and send customer samples as required.
- Follow all standard technical procedures, exercise sound judgment, and complete assigned work with minimal supervision.
- Perform raw material testing when necessary, follow appropriate test methods, and file related paperwork.
- Gather, stock, and manage the product retain area to ensure proper retention and traceability of samples.
- Use appropriate computer systems and laboratory software to support effective testing and data management.
- Determine the disposition of non-compliant finished goods, including first case/last case decisions.
- Place non-conforming material on hold as needed and communicate status to relevant stakeholders.
- Support established quality management systems and safety systems by following all related policies and procedures.
- Maintain an adequate inventory of laboratory supplies, restock items upon receipt, and request replenishment when levels are low.
- Maintain laboratory housekeeping standards and clean all test equipment regularly to ensure a safe and efficient work area.
- Adhere to all job-related safety requirements and use appropriate safety practices and equipment.
- Identify product issues during testing and communicate them promptly to production and other departments as needed.
- Review batch slips for completeness and accuracy, ensuring all required information is present and correct.
- Create, maintain, and update standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the Quality Department to meet internal and external requirements.
- Assist in the training and onboarding of other lab technicians as needed, sharing best practices and proper testing techniques.
- At least 1 year of laboratory-based experience performing material testing.
- Hands-on experience with quality control testing in a laboratory environment.
- Ability to follow detailed written test methods and standard operating procedures.
- Basic understanding of chemistry and wet chemistry techniques.
- Ability to accurately perform and interpret tests such as titration and pH measurements.
- Experience using laboratory instruments such as viscometers and spectrometers.
- Ability to use computer systems and electronic batch record systems for data entry and documentation.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy when recording and reviewing test data.
- Ability to see and distinguish color, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while managing multiple tasks.
- Effective communication skills to relay test results, product issues, and batch adjustments to production and other departments.
- Commitment to following all safety requirements and maintaining a safe work environment.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the country of employment without current or future work visa sponsorship.
- Must have a high school diploma or GED.
- Willingness to work overtime as needed, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Background in quality control (QC) within a manufacturing or laboratory setting.
- Familiarity with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) or similar quality management principles.
- Experience with inspection processes and documentation in a production environment.
- Exposure to gas chromatography (GC) or similar analytical techniques.
- Experience working in a paint, coatings, or chemical manufacturing environment.
- Ability to create, maintain, and update SOPs for quality and laboratory processes.
- Experience assisting in training or mentoring other laboratory technicians.
- Strong organizational skills for managing product retains, lab supplies, and documentation.
- Team-oriented mindset with willingness to wear multiple hats and support colleagues as needed.
This role is based in a laboratory located within a paint manufacturing facility. The environment can be dusty and dirty at times, and the technician should be comfortable working around paint and related materials and occasionally getting paint on clothing or protective gear. The Lab Technician works closely with one other technician on their shift and stays in frequent communication with the production team to coordinate testing and batch adjustments. The lab culture is laid-back but highly collaborative, with a strong team mentality where employees support one another and take on multiple responsibilities as needed. The position may require overtime depending on production demands. Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $26.00 - $26.00/hr.
