Job Title: Lab Technician I
Job Description

This Lab Technician I role supports day-to-day laboratory operations by performing accurate and timely testing of incoming samples, maintaining high-quality data records, and complying with established quality and safety standards. The position works under the guidance of a Laboratory Supervisor and has the authority to identify departures from quality procedures and testing protocols, provided actions remain within established guidelines and sound technical judgment. This is a 6-month contract position with a day shift schedule and the potential for extension based on performance and project needs.

Responsibilities

  • Attend work regularly and arrive on time to support consistent laboratory operations.
  • Read, understand, and follow all management system requirements relevant to assigned responsibilities, including the Quality Manual, standard operating procedures (SOPs), local work instructions, and test methods.
  • Perform laboratory testing on all incoming samples accurately, efficiently, and within required turnaround times to ensure service goals are met or exceeded.
  • Register incoming samples as needed and maintain neat, accurate records of work performed each day for quality control and regulatory purposes.
  • Enter sample data into the electronic laboratory information management system (eLIMS) in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Verify test results and submit them to the appropriate personnel for further processing and transmission within required timelines.
  • Identify process difficulties or issues in laboratory workflows and report them to the supervisor along with proposed solutions.
  • Identify non-conformances and out-of-specification results and follow established procedures for documentation and escalation.
  • Adhere to all health, safety, and environmental regulations related to assigned analytical work and help maintain a clean, safe laboratory environment.
  • Assist colleagues in maintaining laboratory cleanliness, organization, and compliance with safety standards.
  • Maintain a continuous state of readiness to respond to questions and needs from clients, staff, and co-workers.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally, both orally and in writing, with intra- and inter-departmental employees.
  • Promote the company’s professional image by exercising sound and ethical business practices in interactions with clients and the public.
  • Continually seek opportunities to improve the quality of work provided to clients through the use of existing and emerging technologies.
  • Conduct all activities in a safe, efficient, and compliant manner in alignment with laboratory practices and quality systems.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support overall laboratory operations.
Essential Skills
  • High school diploma (HS Diploma) required.
  • 1–2 years of laboratory experience required.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow Quality Manuals, SOPs, local work instructions, and test methods.
  • Familiarity with quality systems and compliance with standards such as ISO/IEC and AOAC ALACC requirements.
  • Ability to accurately register samples and maintain organized, precise records for daily work and quality control.
  • Proficiency in entering and managing data in an electronic laboratory information management system (eLIMS) or similar system.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform laboratory testing accurately, efficiently, and within defined turnaround times.
  • Capability to recognize non-conformances and out-of-specification results and follow appropriate escalation procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to data integrity and documentation accuracy.
  • Ability to adhere to health, safety, and environmental regulations and maintain a clean, safe work environment.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills for interaction with colleagues across departments.
  • Ability to identify process issues and propose practical solutions to supervisors.
  • Willingness to work overtime as needed to support laboratory workload and project timelines.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Food Science, Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience in microbiology or food testing laboratories is highly beneficial.
  • Proficiency in plate reading techniques for microbiological analysis.
  • Experience with food pathogen detection platforms such as BAX, MDS, VIDAS, or similar systems.
  • Some knowledge of food pathogen confirmation procedures.
  • Exposure to laboratory techniques involving PCR and related molecular methods.
  • Ability to adapt to new technologies and methods to improve testing quality and efficiency.
  • Strong teamwork skills and a cooperative attitude when working with colleagues and cross-functional teams.
Work Environment

This position is a 6-month contract role with the potential for extension based on performance and project needs. The work schedule follows a Monday through Friday day shift, typically from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with overtime as required to meet workload and turnaround time commitments. The role is based in a laboratory environment that operates under formal quality systems aligned with ISO/IEC and AOAC ALACC requirements. The lab uses an electronic laboratory information management system (eLIMS) and employs microbiology and molecular platforms such as plate reading and food pathogen detection systems (e.g., BAX, MDS, VIDAS or similar). The environment emphasizes strict adherence to health, safety, and environmental regulations, with an expectation of maintaining a clean, organized, and safe workspace. Team members collaborate closely across departments, and the culture encourages continuous improvement, ethical conduct, and professional communication in support of high-quality service to clients.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $18.00/hr.
