Job Description
- The Geological Specialist supports environmental assessments, remediation projects, and regulatory compliance initiatives through a blend of field and office work.
- This role involves extensive hands-on work at project sites, including sampling, site investigations, and drilling oversight, as well as technical reporting and documentation.
- The position is ideal for someone with a strong technical background, field experience, and a passion for geology and environmental stewardship.
Responsibilities
- Collect soil, rock, sediment, groundwater, surface water, and air samples in accordance with regulatory standards and project requirements.
- Assist with drilling oversight, including logging soil borings and monitoring the installation of groundwater monitoring wells.
- Conduct site reconnaissance and environmental inspections to identify potential environmental concerns and support project planning.
- Perform groundwater monitoring and field testing using appropriate field instruments and standard operating procedures.
- Follow all health and safety procedures on active job sites and contribute to maintaining a safe work environment for the project team.
- Assist in subsurface and geotechnical investigations, including geotechnical analysis and documentation of soil and subsurface conditions.
- Support environmental sampling and site investigation activities related to remediation, environmental compliance, and geotechnical projects.
- Document field activities thoroughly, including field notes, photos, and observations, to ensure accurate project records.
- Assist with the preparation of technical reports, including tables, figures, and appendices that clearly present field and analytical data.
- Help prepare Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments by compiling data, organizing findings, and supporting senior staff in report development.
- Maintain organized project files, logs, and documentation to support efficient project execution and regulatory compliance.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and scientists to execute project tasks and meet project objectives.
- Travel to job sites in the Buffalo area and occasionally to Jamestown to perform fieldwork and support ongoing projects.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geological Science, or a closely related discipline.
- Approximately 1 year of relevant field experience preferred; internship experience counts toward this requirement.
- Demonstrated experience with soil, groundwater, and environmental sampling, including soil sampling, groundwater sampling, and environmental site investigations.
- Ability to perform and document geotechnical and subsurface investigations, including logging soil borings and supporting geotechnical analysis.
- Strong technical writing and documentation skills, with the ability to prepare clear and accurate notes, logs, and report sections.
- Comfort working in the field and willingness to spend up to 80% of time at project sites when needed.
- Willingness to obtain OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER training.
- Ability to travel to job sites around the Buffalo area and occasionally to Jamestown.
- Familiarity with environmental compliance concepts and practices.
- Ability to follow health and safety procedures and apply them consistently in the field.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus.
- Familiarity with hazardous, toxic, and radiological waste (HTRW), radiological remediation, and landfill operations is desirable.
- Experience supporting remediation projects and environmental sampling programs is beneficial.
- Exposure to geotechnical investigation methods and drilling operations is advantageous.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to maintain detailed project files, logs, and documentation.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and scientists.
- Interest in professional growth, including pursuing licensure and advanced technical skills.
- Motivation to work on impactful environmental projects that improve environmental quality and support responsible land use.
Work Environment
- The role offers a balanced mix of field and office work, with approximately 50% of time spent in the field and 50% in the office.
- Field work includes visiting active construction and remediation sites, overseeing drilling operations, conducting site reconnaissance, and performing environmental and geotechnical sampling under varying weather and site conditions.
- Office work focuses on data organization, technical writing, and preparation of reports, tables, figures, and project documentation.
- The position involves regular travel to job sites in the Buffalo area and occasional travel to Jamestown.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Buffalo, NY.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $25.00 - $30.00/hr.
