Job Description
The Construction Materials Technician performs field inspections and construction materials testing to verify that work conforms to project plans and specifications. This role involves conducting a variety of tests on materials such as soil, concrete, and masonry, documenting results with precision, and preparing clear daily inspection reports and testing data sheets. The technician works from drawings, specifications, and diagrams, uses established procedures and methods, and communicates findings effectively to clients and project teams while consistently following safety practices and policies.
Responsibilities
- Perform field inspections and construction materials testing to confirm conformance with construction plans and specifications.
- Conduct a variety of project-specific tests on construction materials, including soil, concrete, masonry, and other materials as required.
- Operate testing equipment, including nuclear density gauges and other specialized instruments, in accordance with established procedures.
- Work from drawings, specifications, and diagrams to plan and perform inspections and tests.
- Use specific methods and controlled procedures to observe site activities and perform testing tasks accurately and safely.
- Make detailed observations during site visits and provide limited interpretation of test results based on established criteria.
- Maintain thorough and accurate documentation of all test results, including detailed data sheets and daily inspection reports.
- Use a calculator and basic math skills to compute and verify mathematical test results.
- Communicate effectively with clients and project teams, clearly conveying findings, issues, and recommendations as needed.
- Adhere to all safety practices and policies to protect personal safety and the safety of others on site.
- Travel from site to site as needed to support multiple projects.
- Work off-shift hours and overtime when project schedules or testing requirements demand it.
Essential Skills
- ACI Concrete I Certification.
- Valid driver’s license with a reliable driving record.
- Experience with concrete inspection and concrete testing.
- Experience with construction materials testing, including soil, concrete, and masonry.
- Ability to operate a nuclear density gauge in the field.
- Effective written, verbal, and listening communication skills.
- Solid interpersonal skills to interact professionally with clients and project teams.
- Basic math skills and the ability to use a calculator for test calculations.
- Basic computer skills for data entry, documentation, and report preparation.
- Ability to read and understand work plans, drawings, specifications, and diagrams.
- Ability to lift, move, push, and pull up to 50 pounds independently and occasionally more than 50 pounds with assistance.
- Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time on active construction sites.
- Ability to kneel, squat, and climb occasionally to access test locations and equipment.
- Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions, including hot and cold environments.
- Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and distinguish sounds in a construction environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Familiarity with civil and commercial construction practices.
- Experience with general materials testing beyond concrete, such as soils and aggregates.
- Knowledge of inspection practices and procedures on construction sites.
- Exposure to or certification through NICET in relevant disciplines is beneficial.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining accurate and complete documentation.
- Ability to follow detailed controlled procedures and standardized testing methods.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety and adherence to safety policies and guidelines.
Work Environment
This is a field-based role in which technicians travel from site to site as project needs arise, primarily within civil and commercial construction environments. Work takes place on active construction sites, often outdoors and in varying weather conditions, including both hot and cold temperatures. The position requires frequent walking and standing for extended periods, as well as occasional kneeling, squatting, and climbing to access test locations. Technicians regularly handle and operate testing equipment such as nuclear density gauges and other construction materials testing instruments, along with standard tools like calculators and computers for data entry and reporting. Work schedules may include off-shift hours and overtime to meet project timelines and testing requirements. The environment emphasizes strong safety practices, consistent use of proper procedures, and professional interaction with clients, contractors, and project teams.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract position based out of Charlotte, NC.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $24.00 - $28.00/hr.
