Job Description

The Environmental Monitoring Technician performs routine and specialized environmental monitoring activities within cleanroom facilities to support compliant manufacturing operations. This role focuses on sampling air, surfaces, and personnel, accurately documenting results in laboratory and information management systems, and ensuring all work aligns with current Good Manufacturing Practices and internal procedures. The technician contributes to data analysis and trending, supports deviation reporting, and helps maintain a safe, controlled, and compliant environment in a growing, state-of-the-art cell and gene therapy manufacturing setting.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct environmental monitoring activities in cleanrooms, including viable and non-viable air sampling, surface sampling, and personnel monitoring.
  • Perform swabbing, sample preparation, and use assay samplers in accordance with established procedures and aseptic techniques.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of all work performed in LIMS and laboratory systems following Good Documentation Practices, standard operating procedures, and company policies.
  • Input environmental monitoring data into databases and perform trend analysis to identify patterns, potential issues, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Assist with data entry and support analysis and trending activities to ensure timely and accurate reporting of environmental conditions.
  • Record results, compare them against specifications, and promptly report any deviations or out-of-specification findings.
  • Communicate discrepancies, deviations, or abnormal results to supervision or management immediately upon discovery.
  • Ensure all activities comply with Current Good Manufacturing Practices, internal policies, procedures, and health and safety requirements.
  • Plan and organize daily workload to meet sampling schedules, testing requirements, and operational priorities.
  • Apply aseptic techniques consistently during sampling and handling of materials to maintain cleanroom integrity.
  • Collaborate with team members and cross-functional partners to support environmental monitoring programs and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Work both independently and as part of a small, growing team, taking initiative to complete tasks and resolve issues as they arise.

Essential Skills

  • Associate’s degree or Bachelor of Science in a Life Science discipline.
  • Strong writing skills with the ability to document work clearly and accurately according to Good Documentation Practices.
  • Strong computer skills, including the ability to perform basic tasks in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Familiarity with environmental monitoring practices in controlled or cleanroom environments.
  • Understanding of Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
  • Comfort working in a cleanroom environment and gowning up for approximately 4–5 hours each day.
  • Excellent communication skills to clearly report results, deviations, and issues to supervision or management.
  • Strong organization and project management skills, with the ability to plan daily workload and adjust priorities as business needs change.
  • Comfort working independently with strong initiative and accountability.
  • Ability to follow aseptic techniques during sampling and handling activities.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Prior environmental monitoring experience, particularly in cleanroom or controlled environments.
  • Experience in pharmaceutical or GMP manufacturing environments.
  • Experience in life science, biotechnology, or related scientific fields.
  • Quality control experience in a regulated environment.
  • Experience with CO2 sampling and compressor sampling.
  • Coursework in biology or related life sciences.
  • Prior gowning experience in cleanroom operations.
  • Experience with environmental monitoring systems, LIMS, or laboratory data management tools.
  • Ability to interpret and support trend analysis of environmental monitoring data.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in documentation and data entry.

Work Environment

This role operates primarily in a cleanroom environment within a modern, state-of-the-art facility supporting cell and gene therapy manufacturing. The technician splits time between working in the cleanroom and performing desk-based tasks such as data entry, documentation, and trend analysis. The team is currently small and growing, and the technician will often work independently at a specific site, so comfort working on one’s own and taking initiative is important. The standard shift runs from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., with some flexibility required as hours may occasionally shift earlier or later based on operational needs. Dress code outside the cleanroom is business casual, while appropriate cleanroom gowning and aseptic attire are required during environmental monitoring activities. The environment emphasizes compliance with cGMP, safety, and quality, while offering opportunities for growth and advancement within a rapidly expanding organization.
