Job Title: Engineering Technician

Job Description

The Engineering Technician performs mechanical and metallurgical testing, inspections, and technical documentation to support a high-volume distribution and laboratory operation. This role records detailed technical, dimensional, mechanical, and performance test data, supports internal teams with drawing and specification reviews, and contributes to new product introduction activities by preparing customer sample submissions. The position offers the opportunity to gain hands-on mechanical lab experience across multiple industries, including automotive, aerospace, heavy equipment, electronics, and defense.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a wide range of mechanical and metallurgical tests, including hardness testing, Rockwell hardness testing, microhardness, metallography, torque-tension, prevailing torque, tensile testing, corrosion testing (salt spray), plating thickness measurement using X-ray, and surface roughness evaluation.
  • Record accurate and detailed technical information, including dimensional measurements, mechanical test results, and performance testing data, in accordance with applicable standards and procedures.
  • Conduct inspections and dimensional layouts based on engineering drawings, GD&T requirements, and applicable test specifications, ensuring compliance with customer and internal standards.
  • Prepare test samples by cutting, mounting, polishing, and etching metals and related materials to support metallography and other laboratory analyses.
  • Review engineering drawings and specifications, interpret requirements, and provide technical support and clarification to internal customers as requested.
  • Support New Product Introduction (NPI) activities by preparing and organizing customer sample submissions and ensuring that all required testing and documentation are completed accurately.
  • Maintain and organize an inventory of commonly required products, tools, and equipment, such as test bolts, washers, mandrels, gages, sockets, and related lab tools.
  • Perform gage calibration activities and verify that inspection and test equipment remains within required tolerances and calibration schedules.
  • Support proficiency testing and metrology activities to ensure the accuracy and reliability of measurements and test results.
  • Follow ISO-related standards and laboratory quality procedures, including practices consistent with A2LA-accredited environments, to maintain traceability and data integrity.
  • Identify and help resolve traceability issues related to materials, test results, and documentation, supporting corrective actions and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Assist with corrective action projects, including small-scale process improvement or mini Six Sigma–type activities, to enhance testing quality and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with internal teams across distribution, engineering, and office functions to ensure that testing and inspection needs are met in a timely and accurate manner.

Essential Skills

  • Two-year degree in a related field or a minimum of five years of experience in a related field.
  • At least 3 years of metals testing experience in a laboratory or industrial setting.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, including GD&T, dimensional layouts, and applicable test specifications.
  • Knowledge of gage calibration practices and the ability to perform or support calibration activities.
  • Experience with sample preparation, including cutting, mounting, polishing, and etching metallic samples.
  • Familiarity with relevant standards and ISO-related laboratory practices.
  • Experience working in an A2LA laboratory environment or similar accredited lab setting.
  • Metals industry experience, particularly with fasteners, electrical components, and stamped or molded parts.
  • Proficiency in blueprint reading, inspection, and charting of test and inspection results.
  • Hands-on experience performing mechanical and metallurgical tests such as hardness, Rockwell hardness, microhardness, metallography, torque-tension, prevailing torque, tensile testing, corrosion testing (salt spray), plating thickness (X-ray), and surface roughness.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills in a testing and inspection environment.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T and ISO standards as they apply to testing and inspection activities.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Proficiency with metrology methods using a wide range of inspection equipment.
  • Experience with proficiency testing and metrology to validate measurement accuracy and consistency.
  • Exposure to corrective action processes and mini Six Sigma–type projects.
  • Experience supporting customers in industries such as automotive, aerospace, heavy equipment, electronics, and defense.

Work Environment

The role is based primarily in a laboratory environment that is attached to a distribution and office facility. Most of the working time is spent in the lab, performing mechanical and metallurgical tests using specialized equipment such as hardness testers, microhardness testers, metallographic preparation tools, X-ray plating thickness measurement systems, torque-tension equipment and tensile testing machines. The environment emphasizes accuracy, traceability, and adherence to ISO-related and A2LA-style quality practices. Team members collaborate closely with office and distribution staff while working in a professional, technical setting.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Solon, OH.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $31.00/hr.
