Job Description

This role focuses on the design and development of desktop and embedded .NET applications that control and monitor complex industrial automation systems. You will work with cutting-edge prototype equipment used in seed research, contributing to the performance and reliability of machines that integrate industrial hardware, cameras, sensors, conveyors, actuators, and robotic systems. Responsibilities

• Architect, develop, and maintain desktop and embedded .NET applications that interface directly with industrial hardware, cameras, sensors, conveyors, actuators, and robotic systems.
• Design and implement machine control solutions using C#.NET, ensuring reliable and precise control of automation equipment.
• Write, test, and maintain PLC programs in Structured Text (IEC 61131-3), with a strong preference for experience on Beckhoff TwinCAT platforms.
• Configure, program, and troubleshoot Epson RC robot controllers, integrating robotic pick-and-place or material handling routines into larger automation workflows.
• Implement, integrate, and debug industrial communication protocols such as MQTT, MODBUS (RTU/TCP), EtherCAT, and other fieldbus or Ethernet-based standards.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration between software, PLC logic, robotics, and industrial hardware.
• Diagnose and resolve issues related to machine control, communication, and system performance in both development and test environments.
• Maintain clear, well-documented code and configuration files to support ongoing maintenance, upgrades, and future enhancements.

Essential Skills

• Minimum 5 years of experience programming PLCs using Structured Text, with strong knowledge of IEC 61131-3 standards.
• Minimum 5 years of experience developing UI and machine control applications using C#.NET.
• Proficiency in embedded software development and desktop .NET application design for industrial automation.
• Ability to perform machine control using PLCs and C#.NET through Structured Text rather than ladder logic.
• Hands-on experience with Beckhoff platforms, preferably TwinCAT, for industrial automation and control.
• Experience implementing and debugging industrial communication protocols such as MQTT, MODBUS (RTU/TCP), and EtherCAT.
• Strong understanding of industrial hardware integration, including cameras, sensors, conveyors, actuators, and robotic systems.
• Ability to program, configure, and troubleshoot robot controllers, with experience in Epson RC considered a strong asset.
• Solid problem-solving skills and the ability to diagnose and resolve complex control and communication issues.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills to document designs, configurations, and troubleshooting steps.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience with Epson robotics and Epson RC controllers, particularly for pick-and-place or handling applications.
• Background in working with prototype or research-focused industrial equipment.
• Familiarity with broader fieldbus and Ethernet-based industrial standards beyond MQTT, MODBUS, and EtherCAT.
• Interest in expanding skills across robotics, advanced automation, and industrial control technologies.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams in an engineering and research environment.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Johnston, IA.

The pay range for this position is $50.00 - $60.00/hr.
