What are the responsibilities and job description for the Chemical Engineer position at Actalent?
Job Description
This role focuses on developing and implementing innovative chemical process solutions for large-scale liquid treatment systems. You will work directly with customers to understand their technical challenges, translate them into a clear scope of work, and lead projects from concept and laboratory validation through pilot plant testing and full system design. The position combines hands-on R&D, process design, and project management, offering the opportunity to solve intricate problems and see your designs operating in large, complex systems in the field.
Responsibilities
- Interface with customers to understand their needs, clarify technical challenges, and define a detailed scope of work for each project.
- Collaborate with internal teams, including lab technicians, chemists, and other engineers, to develop appropriate technical solutions that meet customer objectives.
- Participate in design validation activities, including pilot plant equipment setup and laboratory testing, to confirm process performance.
- Design pilot plant test plans, specify and develop processing equipment, and coordinate with pilot plant technicians and chemists to execute system testing.
- Develop process improvement strategies for equipment and systems based on laboratory and pilot plant data to ensure the correct chemical processes are performed.
- Perform heat and mass balance calculations, hydraulic calculations, and related engineering analyses to determine optimal equipment selection and process configuration.
- Interpret technical data, test results, and system information to prepare proposals, cost estimates, and technical recommendations.
- Manage projects from start to finish, including coordinating with vendors for pricing, quotes, and information on new equipment and technologies.
- Prepare material cost estimates for thermal systems and related process equipment.
- Provide ongoing technical support and information to clients throughout the entire project life cycle.
- Work with high-volume liquid processes, ensuring appropriate design and selection of turbines, pumps, and flow control equipment.
- Contribute to the development and validation of systems involving evaporators, crystallizers, ion exchange, membrane exchange, membrane filtration, desalination, and zero liquid discharge processes.
- Engage with all levels of the organization to develop project plans, define pilot plant requirements, and verify that systems operate correctly to achieve desired results.
- Strong background in chemical engineering with experience in process design and development.
- Hands-on experience with evaporator systems and crystallizer operations.
- Practical knowledge of ion exchange processes, membrane exchange, and membrane filtration technologies.
- Ability to perform and interpret heat and mass balance (HMB) calculations for complex systems.
- Proficiency in reading and developing Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
- Experience working with high-volume liquid throughput systems, including understanding of flow rates, hydraulic behavior, and system dynamics.
- Familiarity with turbines, pumps, and related fluid-handling equipment used in large-scale liquid processes.
- Capability to interpret technical data and translate it into proposals, cost estimates, and technical documentation.
- Strong customer-facing communication skills to discuss technical issues, define scope of work, and present solutions.
- Ability to manage projects from concept through completion, coordinating with vendors and cross-functional teams.
- Experience with desalination systems and zero liquid discharge processes.
- Prior involvement in full life cycle R&D projects, from laboratory concept to pilot plant and field implementation.
- Demonstrated ability to work creatively on intricate technical problems and propose innovative solutions.
- Comfort working in multidisciplinary teams with chemists, lab technicians, and other engineers.
- Interest in large, complex process systems and enthusiasm for seeing designs implemented at scale.
This position is based on site at an R&D facility, where you will work closely with customers, vendors, engineers, chemists, and lab technicians on a daily basis. You will engage with all levels of the organization to develop project plans, define pilot plant equipment needs, and validate that systems operate as intended to achieve customer results. The typical schedule follows a Monday through Friday workweek, with a flexible start time generally between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m., totaling approximately 40 to 45 hours per week. Additional hours may be required during periods with major deadlines or critical project issues, while weekend work is minimal. The environment is collaborative, technically focused, and offers exposure to large-scale, complex systems that provide both visual impact and ongoing technical challenge.
