Job Description
We are seeking an AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) to support construction inspection, materials testing, and non-destructive testing services on infrastructure and building projects. This role ensures that welded materials and structures comply with applicable codes, project specifications, and quality standards in both field and shop environments. The ideal candidate possesses strong code knowledge, attention to detail, and experience with structural steel, piping, or industrial construction projects.
Responsibilities
- Perform visual welding inspections on structural steel, piping, and miscellaneous metal components.
- Verify compliance with AWS, AISC, API, ODOT, project specifications, and approved Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS).
- Review and verify welder qualifications (WPQs) and procedure qualification records (PQRs).
- Observe and document welding activities, including joint fit-up, preheat, interpass temperature, and post-weld requirements.
- Coordinate with the NDT group for ultrasonic, magnetic particle, penetrant, and radiographic testing as required.
- Prepare clear, accurate inspection reports, daily logs, and nonconformance documentation.
- Communicate findings with contractors, project managers, engineers, and owners.
- Support construction quality assurance and quality control programs.
- Maintain compliance with safety policies and client safety requirements.
- Assist with forensic or failure analysis investigations when needed.
Essential Skills
- Active Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification from the American Welding Society (AWS).
- Minimum of 2 years of welding inspection experience within structural steel, bridges, utilities, water/wastewater, or industrial facilities.
- Strong working knowledge of welding processes (SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, FCAW, SAW).
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, welding symbols, and specifications.
- Proficiency with inspection tools.
- Strong written documentation and verbal communication skills.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- High school diploma.
- ICC, ACI, or other construction inspection certifications are a plus.
- Familiarity with ODOT or municipal construction projects.
Work Environment
This is a field-based role at active construction sites, requiring the ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. The position involves physical tasks including the ability to lift up to 50 lbs as needed. Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $25.00 - $35.00/hr.
